Fascinating, I said after reviewing all the details in her mind.

The lack of entry and exit surveillance is why it took so long for the lycans and vampires to find an exit in Bunker 47,she added.Your arrival is likely the only reason we were able to escape.

And you were monitoring the surveillance feeds while they all tried to find a way out, waiting for them to figure it out for you.A cruel yet intelligent method for finding the exit.

It’d also kept her alive since all the supernaturals in her bunker had wanted her dead.

Although, if the Vigils from this bunker were sent to the server farm, then at least some of them knew how to leave this place,I mused, thinking through the protocols.Does that mean surveillance works differently here?

Potentially. Or Lajos never intended for them to return. They were supposed to go to Bunker 27 first, thus allowing them access to a wealth of information, something Lilith would genuinely have frowned upon.

I ran through that possibility and nodded. He likely intended for them to return to Lajos Region, where he would’ve apprehended the research details and then destroyed the Vigils.

Except they sent the data ahead, she reminded me.So they never really had a reason to return.

True,I agreed, thinking it through. He may have intended for them to be terminated—

The door slammed, causing us all to turn in surprise.

Then a buzzing against my thigh had me meeting Darius’s gaze.

We’d discussed the potential for something like this to happen. It had taken us almost fourteen hours to reach this bunker due to all the events on the main island. Which meant Lilith’s allies would have had plenty of notice regarding our intentions.

Not to mention the red flag thrown onto the play when the Vigils never returned.

This scenario had been entirely expected as a result.

Except we’d anticipated someone attacking almost right away. Yet my senses told me there was no one else on this floor apart from us.

I turned toward the elevator, listening intently for movement inside and hearing none.

Nothing else happened.

No lights flickered.

No alarms.

But I picked up on the change in the air, as did Calina.

Pulling out the watch, I read the numbers on the screen and cursed as they started counting down.

“Another doomsday protocol,” Calina whispered, her eyes wide. “And if it went to that watch, then it’s the one signaling for the Vigils to kill everyone in the lab.”

“Then we had better get moving because we only have eight hours to search this bunker before it explodes.” I was already heading toward the elevator, but Calina’s concerned thoughts stopped me.

A horde of supernaturals had worked on the exit door in her bunker for hours with no success.

The only reason it had opened was because of Damien’s explosion from theoutside.

I pulled out my phone to check my signal and found it blocked.

Darius followed suit, his expression telling me his phone reflected the same issue.

“Well, shit.” I quickly calculated our options, my focus going to Calina once more. “We need to get you to a computer so you can send a message to Damien.” I slipped the pistol from my hip and glanced at Darius. “Looks like you’re going to get that bloodbath after all.”

“Brilliant,” he deadpanned, mimicking my pose. “I hope we have enough bullets.”
