It was a perfect embrace.
A forbidden desire.
A blissful balance.
“Mine,” he asserted.
“Mine,” I echoed, my nails scraping down his back in a blatant claim. At least for now.
He nipped my lip as though he’d heard that thought.
And maybe he had.
Our souls were dancing now, our spirits mating on a plane neither of us could access.
All the while, our blood bond thrived.
And another part of me that hated this male chipped away into nonexistence.
He might break my heart. Leave me to suffer. Abandon me once more.
Yet I couldn’t bring myself to believe those threats any longer.
Because a dangerous part of me longed to hope.
For a future.
With Ezra by my side.

A Little Over A Week Later
Kaylaand I had developed a routine of resting during the day and discussing strategy with the others all night.
It’d become apparent quickly that Gleason had more or less relocated to Zebulon’s mansion sometime over the last two years. He acted as a Dark Provenance liaison of sorts, delivering information back and forth by traveling with a Portal Dweller named Remy.
Ashmedai had gathered a lot of details through his various sources, allowing him to devise over a dozen scenarios and several long lists of key players to observe.
Yet he wouldn’t reveal his suspicions about who was orchestrating all this from behind the scenes, something that pissed me off to no end.
But he just kept saying he wouldn’t reveal those cards until the appropriate play.
Whatever the fuck that meant.
Kayla guessed it was because he needed more proof before voicing his accusation, which meant the culprit was important and potentially even considered to be one of our allies.
Or it could be a group of people.
Regardless, I suspected Kayla’s assumption was correct.
Ashmedai could be infuriating, but his actions were typically justified by a rational cause.
Of course, he’d also given Kayla the phone that had blown up the veil. So perhaps not.
We all stood around the table now, one I’d memorized every inch of over the last eight days. Gleason had just returned from another of his discussions with the Dark Provenance, the wariness in his green gaze telling us all that we weren’t going to like what he had to say.
“There were demon sightings in twelve major cities last night. Scion deployed several groups in response to try to minimize the exposure to mortals, but we’re running low on troops.” Gleason paused before adding, “That can’t be a coincidence.”
