And Ajax’s expression confirmed it.

Rather than try to negotiate my way out of this—because there was nothing Ajax could do, and I already knew that—I headed toward the bedroom.

And stopped short when I saw the “outfit” waiting for me on the bed.

“I’m not fucking wearingthat.”

CHAPTER29

CAMI

I paced backand forth in the bedroom, a variety of curses spewing through my mouth.

Because no.Hellno. Fuck this. Absolutely fucking not.No.

Ajax must have heard me swearing, because he entered the room behind me. “What’s going on?”

“Thatis not an outfit,” I snapped.

He took one look at the chains on the bed and winced. “Well, it could be in Hell. Which is where we are.”

I whirled around to face him, furious. “This is not a joke, Ajax.”

“No, it’s definitely not,” he agreed. “But you’re going to have to wear it, Cami.”

“Wear it?” I repeated, picking up the chains threaded with red lace. “This is not something I canwear. It’s… it’s…metallic lingerie.” Which actually did sound like a joke, except I wasn’t laughing.

And neither was Ajax.

The only acceptable item on the bed was the coat. It was beautifully embroidered with golden feathers intertwined with red flames. But it subtly matched the decorative chains, proving that Lucifer did, in fact, expect me to put all of this shit on.

He would allow me to cover up.

But when was I going to be forced to take the jacket off?

And who was going to see me in this monstrosity?

Was it for his personal benefit? Melek’s? Or would I be presented like some sort of damn trophy to be won during the trials?

Maybe Melek had tried to talk to Lucifer about his intention to mate me and this was a kind of sensual test.Does that mean Lucifer intends to mate me, too?Because he certainly had a fucked-up way of showing it.

Aside from that, I didn’t really want to mate Lucifer, either. Sure, he was beautiful, but he was also the Hell Fae King. The male terrified me.

Shit, he would probably kill me just as fast as he would fuck me.

But this wasn’t about sex. This was about obedience. He was testing me, trying to see if I could adhere to his order like a good little female Hell Fae.

My arms wrapped around my chest, my mind giving a resounding“Fuck that”in response.

“Cami, Lucifer isn’t someone you say no to,” Ajax said softly. “If you don’t, he’ll just force me to conjure it on you.”

Anger flared in my chest. “And if he told you to jump off a cliff, would you do that, too?”

Ajax didn’t flinch. He wasn’t even moving, suggesting he was holding his breath. Finally, his muscles flexed as he exhaled. “We don’t know what game he’s playing. For now, it’s best to just play along.”

That wasn’t an answer to my question.

And usually it was Melek playing games. Right now, I preferred the Hell Fae Prince’s antics to this.
