Stupid spell, I think, irritated by how it’s manipulating me and my “mates.”
Bane and Nox don’t actually like me. I know that. But experiencing their affection has me wishing these fated links were real.
The way they knelt for me last night…I swallow.A girl could get used to that treatment really fast.
Hmm?Issy’s groggy voice echoes through my mind. What treatment…?
Issy?I sit up straighter on the couch. Are you okay?
She hums something unintelligible in response.
I frown.You don’t sound very good.
She doesn’t reply right away, but I can sense her stirring.
Issy.My stomach tightens.Did something happen?
Father…She trails off.
What did he do?
No reply.
Issy.
Give me… a minute, she grumbles at me, her snark coming through in those four words.
She hates when I worry about her, but it’s kind of hard not to with everything going on.
I stand up and start pacing, my gaze flicking to the clock in the kitchen as I move.
One minute.
Two.
Three.
Five.
My frown deepens with every step.Something is very wrong.
Seven.
Ten.
Twelve.
As the clock strikes fifteen minutes, I say her name again.
Damn, she replies.I bet myself you wouldn’t last more than four minutes without talking to me, and you tripled that time expectation.
I stop walking.Issy.
Fallon, she parrots back at me.
You’re unbelievable.
I know.
