I would just play the ignorant card if he found me wandering around.
Of course, that would be harder if I was in the middle of the ritual. But I’d just have to make sure there was no one around when I started.
Or any cameras,I thought.Although, it sounded like they were turning a lot of those off.
I chewed on my lower lip as I went into Cam’s bathroom and closet to prepare myself. I couldn’t exactly go out in just his shirt again. I needed shoes for the stone floors of the catacombs—shoes would also confirm that I’d just wanted to go for a walk—and pants to cover my legs.
Unfortunately, he had very few options for me to choose from as he mostly had suits.
Okay, maybe I’ll wear some boxer shorts instead of pants, then,I decided, grabbing a black pair. They’ll fit me like shorts anyway.
The shoes were another issue entirely.
He had a pair of sneakers, but they were way too big.
Sighing, I selected two pairs of socks instead and layered them on my feet. It’ll have to do.If he found me, I’d tell him I’d improvised since I didn’t have access to my wardrobe. Maybe he’d react the same way he had when I’d pointed out that I needed food and would get me some fresh clothes.
Or he’ll be furious and fuck me to death.
Considering that was probably his plan for later anyway, I didn’t give the deterring thought much credence.
I ran a brush through my hair and left it down—there were no products for me in this bathroom, just items for Cam—and gave myself a once-over in the mirror.
Exhaustion stared back at me.
Exhaustion with a hint of devastation,I admitted numbly.
I’m not giving up. Not yet. Not now.
I closed my eyes and blew out a breath, then I grabbed the blood vials and tucked them into the band of my shorts.
Right, then. Let’s go.
While I knew the catacombs were above the research bunker area, thanks to Mira’s conversation with Cam, I had no idea how many levels above me they were or if I would even make it far enough before being caught.
There are cameras everywhere, I muttered to myself as I glanced at the one in Cam’s living area on my way to the door.Hopefully, I’m right about what I overheard and the majority of them are turned off.
Of course, the one in Cam’s suite was probably still on.
Which meant whoever was watching him had definitely witnessed all of our intimate moments.Awesome. Another item to worry about later.
Because concerning myself with that frivolity now would just slow me down.
I was determined to do something, anything, to snap Cam out of this.
Squaring my shoulders, I grabbed the doorknob and twisted.
Unlocked.
This was either a good sign or a sign that I’d just engaged in a trap.
Regardless, I stepped into the hallway.
There were no guards or any signs of life, similar to the last time I’d entered the corridor. Except the lights were on this time, which helped.
The stone floor was hard beneath my socks, but bearable.
Cool air touched my calves as I started moving, sending a slight shiver up my spine. I embraced it, focusing on the chilly temperature out here—it had to be ten degrees colder than Cam’s room—instead of the very real likelihood that I was going to get caught doing something I shouldn’t.
