“Potion!” I exclaimed.

“I’m pressing it!”

“What? No, you’re hitting shift.”

“Oh, sorry. Control, there you go.” Felix used another potion.

“Bowen, use your Spiral Shaft attack,” Alan said.

“Yeah, about that name…,” I started.

Felix chuckled.

“Bowen!” Alan exclaimed. “Pay attention! Artie’s getting pummeled.”

“Felix, you’re supposed to be healing me,” I stated.

Felix hit Control again. “Sorry, I was sidetracked.”

“By shafts?” I asked.

Artie fell over dead.

“Oh, oops,” I said. “What happened?”

Alan looked over from where he was lounging. “You killed Artie.”

“Forever?”

“No, he’ll respawn in town.” Alan leaned forward so he could see Felix. “Dad, don’t help next time.”

“Aw, come on, your dad is a great assistant.”

“I don’t think so,” Alan replied, “since Artie died.”

I leaned over to set my computer down on the coffee table. “It was his first time.”

Felix turned on the television with a remote before snuggling against me once more. “Did you get your tree put up?” he asked quietly.

“I did. Almost knocked over a bookshelf doing it. And I guess I left all my crappy little ornaments with Scarlet in New York.”

“Scarlet?” Felix asked.

“Scarlet Robinson, my bestie. We were roommates so long, people thought we were married.”

“People thought she married a gay man?” Alan asked absently, still playing his game.

I cocked my head to look at him.

He glanced up from the screen. “What? I called it on day one.”

“Did you?”

“He did,” Felix muttered. “Dad, our new band director started today. He’s really cool. He plays so many instruments. He’s gay too.”

“Oh.” I patted Felix’s head, still on my chest. “So you had a one-up on me.”

“I had a one-up since last Sunday when you asked me out.”
