The trees blur by as I full throttle down the highway. I’m so angry I feel like my head is going to explode. My wife lied to me. She knew Jenny was alive, and she kept her from me. She lied!

Why?

I’d ask her, but she’s not here. I hit the side of my helmet a few times before unbuckling it and tossing it in the ditch. As soon as it rolls away, I kick up my speed.

A thousand questions roll through my head as I continue down the road. Several people honk at me, but you know what? I don’t fucking care.

I need to talk to my wife, and she’s on the other side …

What a shit show my life has been. And now Jesse and Dirk are leaving. They’re going to see the country, they said. Did they even think about where that would leave me?

I bet Jesse doesn’t lie to Dirk. Maybe she does. Maybe all women do.

Fuck!!!

Who is the woman in the cemetery? The one I’ve been crying over for the past two decades. The one lying next to my wife. My lying wife.

And Jenny …

Blue and red lights flash behind me, and I kick it up another notch.

Where were the cops when Jenny and I were being trafficked? Fucking bastards. They can kiss my ass.

As I pass the next car, a little girl in her car seat waves at me. Instantly I slow down, watching as the vehicle she’s in pulls away from me. Fuck, what am I doing? I could have killed someone.

The cop catches up to me quickly enough. Slowly, I pull over to the side of the road, knowing I deserve every bit of what I’m about to receive.

A few hours later, Ray is bailing my sorry ass out of jail.

He doesn’t say anything as we work together, loading my bike up on his trailer. When we get in his truck, he lights up a joint and hands it to me.

I take it from him, my head on a swivel. “Is it smart to do this in the parking lot of the cop shop?”

His bushy eyebrows rise in amusement. “Why not? I’ve got enough to share.”

It makes me bark out a laugh, and for the first time in a longtime life doesn’t seem as serious as I’ve been making it out to be.

“You know when Bill turned us away from the more criminal aspects of the club, I thought it was going to get boring.”

We both chuckle at that, passing the joint between us.

He and I remain quiet as we smoke. When we finish, he narrows his eyes on me. “No one knew, brother.”

“Rachel knew,” I say, feeling my anger rise again.

He rolls down his window and flicks the butt of the joint at the police car next to us. “She did,” he agrees.

Ray doesn’t try to make excuses for his niece, and I appreciate that.

“I thought I knew her.”

“We all have parts of us that we keep to ourselves. Even someone as good as Rachel.”

“I sure as hell didn’t keep anything from her. I told her everything.”

“Did you though?”

“Yeah, I did.”
