“Smart guy,” Louise said with an amused smile. “Ask away, and I’ll see what I can answer.”

I spent over an hour talking with Louise, who quickly warmed up after our initial introduction. She was in her fifties, around the same age as my father, and had lived in Golden Falls for nearly her whole life.

As suspected, she knew how to use her phone just fine. She showed me photos from over the years and pulled up news articles about Purrfect Blend, Hal, and Lake Ridge, the bar we were currently in. Once I got her talking, it didn’t take long to realize she was the person I should be going to for any and all Golden Falls questions.

One thing she didn’t share much about, despite my questions, was the building and Lily. Her exact words were,“You’ll have to find out for yourself, but one thing I’ll tell you isnot to underestimate Lily and the lengths this town is willing to go for her.”

By the time our conversation wrapped up, it was time for me to head over to Hal’s. I stood from the stool, reaching into my wallet and pulling out a tip to set on the bar. I’d only had water, but I appreciated her time. “It was nice to meet you, Louise. Thanks for telling me about Golden Falls. I really appreciate it.” I genuinely meant it, and I hoped she recognized that.

While her smile was friendly when I first walked in, her expression was softer now, warmer. “Don’t be a stranger, Gabe. I’m always happy to chat. You’ll have to come back.”

I nodded slowly, not sure if she meant the bar or the town. Both, maybe.

I gathered my things and slipped my coat on, about to start walking toward the door when another part of our conversation came to mind.

“A betting pool, really?” I asked, and she let out a laugh.

“Consider it your welcome to Golden Falls. It’s an honor.”

“Did most people think I was or wasn’t going to show up?” I asked curiously.

“Oh, it’s more complicated than that. Most people thought you were going to show up, but it goes beyond that. Showing up and starting a fight. Showing up and hiding out. You get the idea. Keeps it more interesting and competitive that way.”

“Huh.” So very strange. “What did you bet on?”

She set her palms on the bar top, leaning forward. “That you’d show up and fall in love.”

I raised my brows, a scoff escaping. “Hope you didn’t bet much. You’re about to lose it all.”

“Don’t count me out just yet,” she said with a wink.

Eliza

So Louise met Gabriel today…

She told me as soon as I got to Lake Ridge for my shift.

Me

Ughhh so he’s in town. I was hoping he wouldn’t show up lol.

I’m so nervous for the meeting. I’ve been watching the clock all day.

Eliza

You’re going to do great, Lil. Remember how incredible, talented, and strong you are! You’re prepared and ready to convince Hal.

Jules

Seconding what Eliza said. It’s all going to go well, and we have your back no matter what!

Me

You two are the best, and the reason I’m sane.
