But I didn’t move. I stood right there between them. I turned up my nose at Samaria. I knew I was acting possessive—almost jealous—but I didn’t want to leave Mekhi with her.

“Don’t act like that. If you’d just tell this…” she looked me up and down, “…girlto excuse us for a minute?—”

“Are you deaf? He said y’all had nothing to talk about, and I ain’t going nowhere,” I cut her off.

Her eyes darted to him. “Mekhi?—”

I looked over my shoulder. He shrugged.

“Samaria, you heard what she said.”

I hid my smile as she sucked her teeth. He better had taken my side. Hands on my hips, I eyeballed her.

“Who the fuck are you supposed to be?” she hissed.

“The reason he doesn’t need to talk to you. You need to leave. We were on our way out.”

Her mouth dropped open, and she glared at Mekhi. “Really? So, you going out with her fat ass, too?”

Okay, between Gillian and her, I was tired of the fat jokes.

“Yep, he goingoutwith my fat ass, just like he goingdownon my fat ass.”

I heard coughing behind me, but I ignored him. He better not say shit!

She sniffed. “You ain’t even his type.”

I smirked at her. “He upgraded. Can you blame him?”

“Girl, please. You just something different. A charity case. I ain’t pressed about this shit, because he won’t be with you for long! I know what he likes.”

Her words kind of bothered me, but no way I was going to let that show. Instead, I laughed. “You know what he likes, but he’s here with me. Okay, shorty. Why don’t you leave before you keep embarrassing yourself?”

“You—”

“A’ight,” Mekhi’s voice stopped her midsentence. “That’s enough. Samaria, you gon’ have to go on with all that.”

He walked past us and opened the door. Her jaw dropped as she stared up at him.

“Me? She’s the one who?—”

“Lose this address. Bye, Samaria.”

Mekhi’s tone left no room for argument. Samaria narrowed her eyes and glared at both of us for a second, but then she stomped her way out. He turned toward me.

“You prove whatever you needed to prove, Little Thug?”

I scoffed. “I have nothing to prove to that girl. I was just…”

My voice trailed off, unable to finish the lie. Mekhi didn’t say anything, but a slick smile creased his face.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

I rolled my eyes at him before walking out. He took me to a local deli where we grabbed sandwiches and soup.

“This doesn’t seem like your type of place,” I said as I sat down.
