Enrique’s words hit Ramón like a surfboard to the head. His brother was right—Ramón didn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to. He could walk away from everything and still have enough money to do what was right, until he figured out his next step. Hell, that was what he’d threatened to do anyway. The freedom paved by his privilege and earned through his hard work could allow him to live a more fulfilled life for himself, but more importantly, to give back to his community.
But Ramón did enjoy the work, and the thrill of closing a deal. Was he ready to give it up? He wasn’t sure.
Jaime sat down on the sofa.
“How about you, Jaime? Are you happy doing social media? And no, I’m not giving you a hard time.”
Jaime shrugged. “I’m kind of over it.”
“What do you want to do now?”
“I don’t know. I just want to be part of creating something instead of just promoting Dad’s business.”
Ramón was grateful to be surrounded by his brothers. Though they fought, these built-in best friends for life were the only good things that had come from their parents’ marriage.
For years, their father’s crushing expectations had almost suffocated them. For Ramón, it had turned him into a workaholic; for Enrique, it had turned him into a slacker; and for Jaime, it had turned him into a drifter. But now they were no longer boys, and it was time for them all to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming their parents for everything wrong in their lives.
They all needed to be happy.
Ramón could literally do anything he wanted. It was time for him to become his own man.
And he wanted to get serious with Julieta.
He wanted to spoil her, pamper her, tell her how he really felt about her. What better place to do that than in Mexico?
He called his travel agent and booked a trip for the two of them to Cabo.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Seeing Ramón with her family finally gave Julieta the confidence she needed. She would no longer hold back her heart from him.
Though they had spent a few nights together, they still hadn’t had sex. Ramón hadn’t even pursued it. Why?
Maybe he had been extra careful with her because she worked for him. He probably didn’t want things to get messy if they didn’t work out.
But that was the thing. For the first time in Julieta’s life, she was pretty sure that things would work out.
That scared and excited her.
Ramón showed up at Las Pescas before it opened for the day.
“Hi. Are you ready to get back to work?”
“No. Hey, let’s talk.”
Julieta’s heart dropped.
Did he want to havethetalk? The one where he ended things with her?
Maybe Ramón had finally woken up and come to his senses, realized that he could never have a serious relationship with a girl from the wrong part of San Diego. Or maybe he’d fallen for some beautiful rich Latina girl with the pedigree to match his. Maybe because her family was completely crazy at Lotería night, he had decided he was done with her.
What was he going to tell her now?
“We’re going to Cabo.”
Julieta’s jaw literally dropped. Okay, maybe she was wrong. Cabo was the exact opposite of breaking up. Julieta hated herself for doubting him, even just for a minute. What was wrong with her that she couldn’t possibly believe he would be serious about her?
“What are you talking about? When?”
