“I’m sure it will be fine.” Kenz pats my back. “They’re assholes but not actual criminals.”

DEATH (Luke):

Good girl

Seriously? What am I? A dog?

Me:

Do I get to know your sexual experience?

PESTILENCE (Eli):

Experienced

I purse my lips at that answer. I guess I need to be more specific if I want to know, but why would I want to know? It’s not like I’m actually considering having sex with any of these assholes. They can make my last year of school hell, but like Kenz said, they aren’t actual criminals.

I drop my phone in my bag and pay attention to my favorite teacher, Ms. Sullivan. I’ve spent the last three years in one art class or another, which is why I know a horseman wouldn’t be in an advanced art class. So for at least one hour a day, I should have peace.

Of course, the next period could be the worst yet. Lunch.

CHAPTER 3

The Punishment

Harper

A few years ago, the school decided it would be better to have everyone take lunch at the same time. That way clubs could meet. Students could talk to teachers when they needed to get extra help. And everyone got a break.

Great for everyone, right? Except that means all four horsemen will have lunch at the same time as me.

If they can find me. Ever since freshman year, I bring lunch from home because being in the cafeteria is hell for someone who wants to go unnoticed.

“Do you think this is a smart idea?” Kenz asks for the fifth time.

“Staying in the art room on the opposite side of the building from the cafeteria?” Duh. “Hell, yes. If they want me, I’m not going to make it easy for them to torment me. I’m not some lamb to the slaughter.”

I rode under their radar for three years of high school and they never noticed me in middle school. Just because they finally decided I’m interesting because I’m a virgin doesn’t mean I don’t know how to evade those fuckers.

“Are you sure they aren’t going to track you down?” Kenz picks at the sandwich she packed. “They have resources. They can find people when they want to.”

“I didn’t agree to their terms of ownership.” I hold my head up high while I hide from them. “They can’t force me to do anything.”

I hope. I mean seriously, someone would have reported it by now if they did something like that, right? They aren’t actually gods. They are high school boys. Fallible.

My phone buzzes a few more times, but I’ve been ignoring it since it started going off when the lunch bell rang.

“Don’t you think you should check that?” Kenz makes a gesture toward the phone. “You might piss them off.”

“So? If I piss them off, what will they do?” I shrug. Punish me? If they can find me. They have nothing on me. They barely even know me. They just found out I’m the last virgin and thought hmm, that would be fun to tackle. Fuck them.

“Did you check your phone after Luke gave it back?” Kenz cringes. Maybe she’s worried she’ll be punished by association. That’s actually not an unreasonable assumption, but her boyfriend will protect her. “What if he put a tracker app on it?”

“He couldn’t have. You have to have the passcode to add an app.” I pick up my phone and glance over the messages.
