It hit me with blinding clarity that Poppy wasn’t scared of me at all.

She wasintome.

I debated between sleeping naked, like I usually did, or covering up in sweatpants. Ultimately, I compromised by slipping under the covers wearing my boxer shorts and a pair of socks. Usually, it was just me in the socks. So, I should getsomepoints for modesty.

My cock jutted forward hungrily. It thought it was on a jaunty mission and halfway to achieving its goal as I settled in next to her. But it was my job to keep its expectations at bay. I wouldnotbe fucking my new neighbor,Miss Cheery Poppins.

Not tonight.

Not tomorrow night.

Not next month.

Not next year.

Some things were off-limits. Like her. Poppy was a pure and buoyant creature. She deserved more than a man like me could ever give her.

Poppy moaned softly and shifted in her sleep.

That made Hopkins groan. Or maybe it was me taking up more than half the bed. He was sandwiched tightly between Poppy and me.

After a few minutes of trying to keep me towards the edge of the bed, he gave up. Hopkins slunk off the bed and padded over to his dog bed on the floor. The place was small, but my dog had four beds to choose from. One that he shared with me and three that were just for him.

It was almost worse with him gone. He’d been the buffer between me and all her decadent curves.

When I say it took all my willpower to lay there on my back and not flip towards her, I mean it took ALL my willpower.

One little shift to the side and I could be holding her.

Another subtle pulse of my hips and I could have my cock pressed against her softness.

Everything about Poppy was soft. And I realized with some horror that I’dmissedthe softness of a woman at my side.

I felt like Hopkins, falling for her in an instant.

Now that I’d had a tiny taste of the woman, it was hard not to want more.

The worst part was… I didn’t want a one-night stand with this woman.

I needed alotmore than that.

Damn it. Why did I have to fall for her?

Chapter 13

Poppy

“Mmmm. You feel good,” I whispered, half-asleep.

He responded with a deep exhale of breath.

As I woke up more, I told my warm, snuggly bed partner, “I had the funniest dream. I dreamed that I spent the night at my neighbor’s house.”

I buried my face in a solidly built man-chest and breathed deeply.

Tangerines.

“Why do you smell like tangerines?” I asked dreamily.
