“Twenty thousand dollars?”

“Do you need more?” Lory asked, her beautiful face lined with concern.

“No, he doesn’t need more. He doesn’t need anything.”

“He might not but he’s entitled to it.”

“This is crazy,” he muttered. His head was spinning.

“All right. We’ll be in touch.” Keaton gripped his elbow and steered him from the room. Neither of them spoke until they were in the elevator. Alone.

“What the fuck just happened?” Jake asked.

“Maddox just became a millionaire.” Keaton laughed.

“That’s a shit ton of money. Who the hell has that much money?”

“Apparently the Dawsons.”

“How much are they worth if Maddox has that much at his disposal?”

Keaton tapped away at his phone. “Give me a second. Roark did some research when we worked out who Renee was related to. It’s here in my emails somewhere…”

“I can’t believe Renee has any family at all. She told me she was an orphan and grew up in foster care.”

“I know. I remember you telling us that when we first met last year after you got Maddox back. Ah, here it is… holy fucking shit is right.” Keaton’s gaze met his. “At last count, the Dawson Foundation was worth three hundred and eightbilliondollars, and Mallory Dawson had personal wealth estimated to be in the hundreds of millions.”

For the second time today Jake’s jaw dropped. “She’s loaded?”

“So is Maddox.”

“He wasn’t exactly poor to begin with.”

“I know but this just shot it out of the park.”

Jake shook his head. “What the hell do I do with twenty thousand a month?”

“Buy a lot of toys?” Keaton suggested with a grin.

“This is crazy.”

“Agreed.” Keaton clapped Jake on the shoulder. “Now let’s go have lunch and deal with this paperwork so you can get back to enjoying this brief holiday with your son.”

“Ry’s talking about taking them to see the seals on the wharf.”

“I think Jack said something about getting together for dinner.” The elevator stopped, the doors opening on the ground floor and Keaton put his arm across the opening. “After you.”

“Thanks.” When Jake stepped into the foyer, he saw Ry and Maz waiting for him.

Maddox was strapped into a backpack Ry wore, while Zane was in a front pack on his chest. Jake had to laugh. It would have been easier to bring a stroller but Ry insisted on using the packs. He also insisted on wearing both.

“You’re an idiot,” he said as he stopped next to his best friend.

“I complained once about a sore back and he won’t let me lift a finger, never mind my own child,” Maz said with a roll of her eyes.

“Hey, Jake, why don’t I take these papers back to my hotel room and go over them while you spend the day with this crazy bunch?”

“Are you sure?”
