“Well she was due four days ago.”
Shaking his head, Jack said, “Can you believe she got pregnant so soon after Zane?”
“It’s not that soon. Zane’s sixteen months.”
“Yeah, but he’s still in diapers.”
“I take it you’re not looking to add to the family any time soon.”
“Nope. We’re waiting until Drew is two before we even think about going down that road again. Plus we’re still splitting our time between here and Vegas. It’s a lot when you’re dragging a baby with you.”
“I can imagine.”
“When are you going to pop the question?”
Jake cut his gaze to the side, his head staying still. “What makes you think I’m going to?”
“Dude. You’ve had that ring box in your pocket every time I’ve seen you for the last six months.”
He laughed. “I didn’t think anyone noticed.”
“We’veallnoticed. Which begs the question. Has Mallory noticed?”
“She said no.”
Jack turned to face him. “I’m sorry. What?”
“I asked the day I bought the ring. She said no. Said she wanted me to be sure. Wanted me to ask because I wanted to get married, not because I thought it was the next step or the best for her or Mad.”
“Is she right? Did you ask because you thought you should?”
“Fuck no! I want to spend the rest of my life with the woman. I want babies with her. I want her in my bed every night.”
“She’s not in your bed now?” Jack arched an eyebrow in disbelief.
Jake sighed. “She doesn’t want to give Mad the wrong idea.”
Laughter burst from his friend, drawing the attention of Ry and the woman over at the playground.
“It’s not funny.”
“Oh, you are wrong there, my friend. It’s hilarious.” He clapped Jake on the back as Ry jogged over.
“What’s going on?”
“Jake here isn’t getting any because Mallory doesn’t want to give Mad the wrong idea.”
“I didn’t say I wasn’t getting any,” Jake grumbled.
“I know you’re getting some. I swear, I needed brain bleach after walking into your living room last week.”
“Hey,” Jake held up his hands. “Don’t blame me for that. You were supposed to be gone.”
“We’d walked out the front door like three seconds before. You couldn’t even wait until we’d hit the sidewalk.”
“What can I say? I can’t keep my hands off her most of the time when Mad’s around; the second he’s not, it’s no holds barred. I don’t waste an opportunity.”
“Then don’t waste this one.”
