Not anymore.
“What I know is that you’re going to fucking jail and you don’t have a penny to your name.” I look her over andtsk. “I also know you probably got those clothes out of a donation box, am I right?”
“You fucking cunt.”
“I might be a cunt but I’m a well dressed cunt, mother. And you’ve got nothing but my offer for five hundred bucks, so start fucking talking now or I’ll send you to jail without a cent.”
She spits at me but it goes wide and misses. “I don’t know why you need me to tell you when Daddy Dearest is so eager to do your bidding, but she’s still in Texas.”
“Where?” I press. There’s blue and red flashing around us now. I know the cops are here and I’m going to lose my chance to get the information I want out of her. “Talk fast or I’m going to make it four hundred.”
“Miss, step away from the suspect,” A cop calls to me and her eyes dart over my shoulder. I don’t look away though and that’s why I see the look of powerlessness fall over her so suddenly that I’m taken by surprise. She’s never looked like this but we both know she’s beat.
She glares at me as she answers me. “Fine! She’s in Boerne. Her name is Agnes Vlahos, she lives in Boerne and that’s the last I fucking heard of her.”
I know the town. It’s a sleepy little town in the Hill Country. I don’t expect there will be that many women with the last name Vlahos in the area, so the information is enough for me. I step back from her and nod at the police officer that’s watching us closely.
“What happened?” he asks.
“She had a knife and she attacked me,” I tell him and nod at Marco and Peter. “These men are my security and witnesses to it all.”
“She’s lying!” My mother screams and kicks at Peter as he hauls her up from the ground. “She owes me money!”
“That the knife there?” The cop nods to the side and I see it. It’s a switchblade. I don’t want to think about what she thought she was going to do to me with it.
“Yeah, that’s the one.”
He motions for his partner to cuff my mother. “Let’s get the suspect in custody and go from there,” he says before he gives me an apologetic look. “We’re going to have questions for you. Might take a while.”
“That’s fine,” I start but Marco is there and interjecting.
“Mrs. Sokolov lives upstairs. I’m the head of security and any questions you have can be answered by Peter or myself, but Mrs. Sokolov is going home.” He looks at my mother while she tries to fight going in the handcuffs the officer is currently slapping on her. “We’ll bring you to her if you need to question her.”
The police officer looks like he’s going to fight us on it but when his partner swears he looks back. I gasp when I see my mother biting his hand.
“Holy fucking shit,” I whisper.
“Oh, god fucking dammit. It’s always something in this damn city.” He sighs and nods at Marco. “Take her upstairs. We’ll get your man here to contact you when we need to speak to Mrs. Sokolov.”
Marco takes my arm and leads me to the elevators but I can still hear my mother’s shrill screaming. “You owe me! You said you’d pay me! I want my money!”
Her screams bounce off the walls and the cement floor of the parking garage and I don’t miss the questioning look Marco gives me as we wait for the elevator. He heard my offer to my mother for information. He knows what she’s talking about, but to the officers shoving her into the back of the squad car she sounds deranged.
I give Marco a brief smile and step into the elevator when the doors slide open. “I lied.”
CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT
LAW
My woman got attacked. She got fucking attacked in broad goddamn daylight with Marco and Peter with her. I’m fucking furious when I arrive at our home and nearly run into the cop that’s leaving. He’s laughing with Honey and I don’t miss the empty cup he’s handing back to her, because of course she would host them with coffee and a smile even though she nearly got gutted like a fucking fish.
“Are you all right?” I ask her, catching her arm and bringing her close to me. I run my hands over her sides and she laughs.
“I’m alright, I promise,” she says and leans into me when I take her into my arms.
“We’re sorry again that you had to deal with that, Mrs. Sokolov.” I look at the cop. He’s older and I can tell he means what he’s saying. He’s definitely fallen for Honey’s easy charm. “We’ve taken the suspect into custody. She won’t be getting out for some time, so please try and forget about this.”
“Thank you for everything. Really, Officer Lewis. I appreciate it.”
