“I thought I lost you.”
“Never,” he says and gives me a bloody smile. “I made you a vow, princess. I will always come back to you.”
CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE
LAW
Honey’s father fights like a motherfucker. I should have known he was going to try and get the jump on me when I was busy with someone else. I knew it, felt the wrongness of my move when I disarmed the asshole trying to shoot me. That second gave Zeus the opportunity to shoot me in the back.
For one fucking second I thought it was over. That after everything, I made the move that lost the game. But when I turn I see her.
Honey.
My beautiful fucking wife. Running through a room that’s gone to hell with a gun in her hand. I know she’s never fired a gun in her life but Zeus doesn’t know that. It’s the distraction I need, I can use this. I know I’m right when her first shot goes wide and Zeus’ attention focuses on her, the pistol he’d been pulling from his ankle holster going still as he stands, but I should have known better.
My girl is always a surprise. She never disappoints and her next shot hits true. She shoots Zeus and the fucker drops like a ton of bricks. I’m proud of her. The emotion comes quick and easy, just like it always does when it comes to Honey. Relief comes next when Taylor grabs her and carries her out of the Great Room. She’s safe. I know that and I can finally focus on the fuckers in front of me.
Zeus is still moving but he’s down for the count. I sweep the room with Marco and the rest of his men. The second Zeus went down it was like a plug was pulled from his hired men. A few of them bolt from the room and the others drop their guns, not willing to lose their life over a boss that might bleed out anyways.
I help Connie to her feet and she groans. “You know he shot me for helping you,” she tells me as I help her to a seat.
“Seems fair but I’m sorry.”
She pulls a phone out of her pocket and rolls her eyes at me. “I’m calling the cops.”
My lip curls. I don’t like cops. This is going to be a fucking mess when they get wind of this. I look around and debate telling her not to. We might be able to cover it up but I sigh and nod. If I want to stay clean, we have to call the cops.
“Fine.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve got CCTV footage,” she says, jerking her chin at the corner of the room. “Evidence it was all defense. We aren’t going down for this one.”
I notice the ‘we’ but don’t say anything. My mind is on my wife, not over if I’ll do time for this or not. Even if they put me away, I’ll get out. All that I care about is if she’s safe.
The second I clear the door she’s in my arms. She throws herself at me and it hurts to catch her but I’m more worried about the fact that I’m bleeding all over her.
“I thought I lost you.” She’s crying, her body shaking in my arms so I hold her closer.
I hate it when she cries so I give her a smile. “Never. I made you a vow, princess. I will always come back to you,” I tell her and hold her to my side. “You’re never getting rid of me,” I go on, leading her away from the club as the first red and blue lights start to show up.
“Good,” Honey wails and I try to soothe her but it doesn’t matter. She’s inconsolable, which is fair. As far as days go this isn’t one she’s going to recover from easily, but I’ll be there with her every step of the way.
There’s a familiar face in the cops that question us. Officer Lewis is here and the second he sees Honey, I know he remembers her. Fucker should, seeing as he just saw her a few hours before.
“Mrs. Sokolov?” he asks, taking in her bloodied clothing and the fact that I’ve been beat to shit. The paramedics patched my shoulder and side well enough but I’m not letting them take me to the hospital. The second they’re done questioning us, we’re going home. If I need another look, I’ll have a private doctor come to us.
She nods and gives him a watery smile. “Hey, Officer Lewis.”
“Are you all right?” He sounds genuinely concerned and I decide to use that to get us out of here.
“She needs to rest. If she goes into shock out here it’s going to be worse for her. How much longer on this questioning?”
He hesitates but when Honey sniffles he nods at me. “I’ll take your statement now. There’s enough witnesses corroborating the fact that this was a premeditated attack on you both. We’ll have you on the way soon if your lawyer makes contact.”
“They’re on their way,” I tell him, because it was the first call I made, the second I was able to calm Honey down long enough for her to catch her breath. Officer Lewis gives me a jerk of his chin but finds a blanket for Honey, so I force myself to be patient. I hear Addie before I see her.
“His lawyer is here so back the fuck off!”
A second later she’s forcing her way through the crowd and rushing up to us with my lawyer in tow. “Go do lawyer shit,” she barks at him and I sigh, but I get it. She’s stressed and she’s looking for Taylor. Still, she hurries up to us and fusses over Honey while she keeps an eye on the crowd.
