As I shimmied back into my blue satin dress and adjusted the straps, there was a knock on the dressing room door.
“Come in!”
“Barrett,” came Flynn’s gravelly voice. Tingly awareness shot down my spine when I turned to face him.
He stalked toward me, grasping my upper arms before his mouth collided with mine. Our tongues danced, tangled. The adrenaline from my performance was still humming in my veins, and it flared to life. I jumped into his arms, straddling him around the waist.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Flynn muttered, his mouth moving to the column of my throat.
“What?”
“You on stage. You were incredible.”
His words slammed into me, giving me something I didn’t realize I needed. Power. Control. Dominance. Over him.
I slid down his body, my high-heeled feet hitting the floor, but I stayed in his arms. We hadn’t been apart but two days, and yet I’d missed him.
“Flynn,” I moaned into his ear.
“I love hearing you say my name.” He smiled, but it was all teeth. He bent to nip my neck. “I’ve missed you.”
He echoed exactly what was going on in my head.
I quivered. “Did you?”
“Not the same when I don’t get to talk to you, feel you.” His hand skimmed up my dress, and his fingers toyed with the curve of my bottom, fingering the lace underwear I wore.
“Should I even bother asking about the conversation you had with Marino?”
“No.”
I sighed, gently disengaged from his hands, and moved away. I already missed his heat. “I hate that you won’t tell me.”
“I know. But can you live with that?”
“I guess I have to. I don’t really have a choice. Not if I want this to continue.”
“Do you want this to continue?”
Pausing for a moment, I cocked my head to the side and bit my lip. I nodded and heard Flynn’s slow exhale.
“Were you really worried I’d walk away?”
He paused and studied me. “I always wonder what it will be that inevitably pushes you away. Because something will.”
“Don’t be so fatalistic,” I commanded.
“It’s in my nature.”
Not wishing to get into something heavy after a night of performing, I changed the subject. “Can you stay down here for another performance?”
“Will you watch with me?”
I moved close to him again, wrapping my arms around him, pleased that he let me. I rubbed my nose against his jaw line. “I’ve got something planned…but I need time to set it up.”
“What is it?”
“A surprise.”
