I descended the staircase of the jet and felt rain drops splatter my forehead. The sky was gray, and a storm was imminent.

Scotland weather mirrored my life. Every now and again both Scotland and I had stretches of sun, but it never lasted.

Sasha met me on the air strip. He looked solemn, yet formidable. I was grateful for him. Not just because of what he meant to me, but because he called Flynn a friend. And he was willing to leave his fiancée and baby to help clean up a mess that had nothing to do with him.

“How are you?” he asked when he was standing in front of me.

“You want to have this conversation now? Your pilot is waiting.”

“He can wait,” Sasha said. “Talk to me.”

“About what’s going on with The Rex, or me?”

“You. I’ll learn everything about The Rex from Flynn.”

“I have an appointment with Dr. Elmond later this afternoon. Flynn doesn’t know. I was about to tell him. Literally about to tell him, and he got the phone call about the bomb.”

“And you didn’t tell him about your appointment because he has enough on his plate.”

“Don’t make it sound like an accusation,” I said lightly.

“I know you. That’s why you didn’t tell him,da?”

“Partly,” I admitted.

“And the other part?”

“I want to have all the answers before I tell him anything. I want to know what’s wrong with me. I want to know my prognosis first. I want to know all the steps in between so I don’t have to be another problem he has to fix.”

“You’re his wife, not one of his hotels. You’re not even remotely in the same category.”

I swallowed. “I have to do it this way.”

He scratched his jaw. “He’ll murder me. When he finds out I knew what was going on with you and didn’t tell him.”

“Then tell him,” I threw out. “And cause him more stress.”

“Don’t put that shit on me, Barrett. I don’t agree with this, and you’re putting me between you both. Again.”

“I know.” I sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m just so mixed up about all this.”

“Come here.”

He pulled me into his embrace.

“Thank you,” I mumbled against his coat.

“For what?”

“For being there when I had the seizure.” I pulled back to stare up at him.

“That was out of my control. Timing.”

“Timing,” I said with a nod.

He squeezed my shoulders and then dropped them. “I’ll have my phone on. If you need… anything.”

“Can I take your driver for the afternoon?” I asked him.
