He shrugged.
“What?” I demanded. “What’s that shrug about?”
“Flynn changed his life. He’s no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of running The Rex in New York. He stepped back into the shadows, and when he needs to be somewhere, he just goes. Why own a private jet and have a pilot on standby if you never travel?”
“Flynn is still co-leader of the SINS,” I pointed out. “He lives in Scotland for that reason.”
“Flynn could turn it over to Duncan and take his wife and children and move back to New York at any time. Or even live somewhere else if he wanted. The point I’m trying to make is that things don’t have to look the way they used to. In what world would I have ever thought I’d do business with the Scots? In what world would I ever have thought I’d be marrying a beautiful Irish lass. But back to our discussion…”
“You don’t want to live in Scotland. You said so yourself—the weather, remember?”
“The weather there isn’t that terrible,” he mused.
“Holy shit. You’rethe one who wants to move to Scotland! Why the hell didn’t you say so?” I demanded.
“I didn’t want you to think—”
“That you were doing it to be close to Barrett.” I sighed.
“I’ve killed for you, Quinn.”
“You’ve killed for her, too,” I pointed out.
He looked at the baby snuggled in my arms. “One day, I’ll probably have to kill for Helena. It seems that’s what I do…kill men for the women I love.” He paused for a moment and then said, “You love me, but you don’t fully trust me.”
“That’s not true. I do trust you.”
“You know there’s nothing romantic with Barrett, and there hasn’t been since I met you.”
“I know.”
“You make things about Barrett because you don’t want to say what’s really in your heart. You don’t want to hurt me. Tell me what you really need to tell me, Quinn.”
Chapter18
SASHA
“Let me put Helena in her crib,” Quinn said. “Then we can talk.”
Talk.
I wasn’t going to like this.
Not one bit.
But hearing what she had to say, no matter how brutal or how emotional, would be my cross to bear. Anything she had to tell me, I’d deal with it.
When she came back from putting Helena down, Quinn took a seat on the couch next to me. She stared me in the eyes and said flatly, “I wish you hadn’t killed him.”
Bile rose in my throat, but I mashed it down like did with everything else.
“You still love Ori,” I accused.
She shook her head. “No. It’s not about love. It’s about hate. I hate him, Sasha. I never should’ve asked you to get your hands dirty. I should’ve been the one to end his life. Then I’d know…”
“Know what?” I asked.
“That I was strong enough to do it. He took so much from me. From us. He gave me Helena, yes. But at what cost? I feel so weak, Sasha.”
