Sasha continued, “What do you think? You want to make love on a Persian rug? Helena just went down for her nap. We have some time.”

“What if someone walks into the room while I’m naked on the floor?”

“I’m willing to take the risk if you are.”

“Another reason I want our own space.” I paused, my brow furrowing.

“What?” he demanded.

“Nothing.”

“Not nothing. There’s something on your mind that has nothing to do with people potentially walking in on us while we’re naked. So what is it?”

I bit my lip and then asked, “Have you noticed…”

“What?”

“Anything weird about Barrett’s behavior recently?”

“You noticed it too.”

I nodded. “She seems…jumpy.”

“I was going to say troubled.”

“Troubled?” I repeated. “How do you mean?”

Sasha shook his head. “I don’t know. She just—she stares at me, but I don’t think she sees me. She laughs but it sounds hollow, like her mind is somewhere else.”

“She looks thinner. Her cheekbones…” I stroked a finger across one of my own. “Has she said anything to you?”

“Why would she say anything to me?”

“Because you’re Sasha, and she’s Barrett.”

“No. She hasn’t divulged anything to me.” He rubbed his chin.

“You haven’t asked?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’ve overstepped my bounds already with her. This is for Flynn to handle.”

“And is he? Handling it?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you meanyou don’t know? You guys drink and talk almost every night in the study. What do you talk about?”

“Business.” He arched a brow. “You could ask her.”

“I could,” I agreed.

“But you won’t.”

“No, I won’t. She needs time to open up about whatever is bothering her.”
