“I’ve already explained that, Elisheva,” he replied smoothly.“Only when you truly believe will you be enlightened on that end.”
I eyed him, knowing that this wasn’t as simple as how he was making it sound.“It won’t be you, will it?It’ll be another Archangel explaining my role to me, won’t it?”
That smirk was back.“Ah, Elisheva,” he cooed.“If only you realized your true potential, then none of this would be necessary.”
“I thought you were here because Lazarus messed up,” I reminded him.“What does that have to do with my true potential?”
“I am referring to the recent events of this past week,” he chuckled, but it wasn’t a soothing chuckle, or even a particularly happy one.
“I need to get home,” I announced.“I need some sleep and clarity, and I can do neither here.”
“Clarity about Lazarus, or clarity about your destiny?”
“Both,” I openly admitted.“I need clarity on both.”
“Before you go, I must warn you that they’ll come for you again, Elisheva,” he said.“If they can get to you before the deadline, then they will.”
“Then why haven’t they come for me already?”
“Because they were winning,” he answered.“As long as you stayed away from Lazarus, they were winning. However, that is no longer the case, is it?You are here because you’re feeling exactly what I’ve been trying to explain all along.”
Ignoring that, I stood up, then left the room. After all, what in the hell could I say to that?Apparently, my epic love story came with a side dish of the end of humanity.
Chapter 16
Lazarus~
While the smart thing would have been to go home, I just couldn’t.Whatever had happened during that kiss, it had left me shaking with the need to be near Elisabeth, something that could in no way be healthy for anyone. So, despite Elisabeth’s claims that she needed space, I was at her house, sitting on her doorstep, still trying to find a way to explain how I knew where she lived without sounding like a psychopath.
When Elisabeth had refused to answer my phone calls or reply to my texts, I’d gotten desperate enough to follow her home from St.Dymphna’s one evening, and I had sat in my car for over two hours, trying to find a way out of the mess that I had created. However, I hadn’t been able to come up with anything, and determined not to ruin my entire career by getting arrested for stalking, I’d chosen to cut my losses, and I was regretting that now.In fact, I’d been feeling nothing but regret since the second that Elisabeth had walked out of that hotel room.
Now, while her doorstep wasn’t comfortable in the least, my guess was that the inside of her house was.Unlike most physicians, Elisabeth didn’t have a fancy penthouse or two-story manor.Instead, she lived in a cottage-style house that sat on about an acre of land just outside the city, and I could only imagine how much peace it brought her to be able to live quietly out here.
My eyes squinted against the headlights of her car as she pulled into her driveway, and all I could do was pray that she didn’t go off, all half-cocked.Now, while I wouldn’t blame her since I was totally violating her personal space, if the world was really coming to an end, then we had bigger fish to fry than my slight obsession with her.
I stayed seated as the garage door opened, Elisabeth driving all the way inside, and either she hadn’t seen me out here, or else she didn’t care that I was out here, sequestering herself in the safety and comfort of her own home. However, it wasn’t a few moments later that I heard the front door open behind me, and I could feel my lungs begin to work again, because that’s what she did to me.
