And yet, I was supposed to interview Wolf but ended up playing his game. Trapping myself into a deal to gain my freedom.
“I have one rule as well,” Wolf states. “I’ll answer your questions, but my past is off-limits. I don’t tolerate people seeking dirt and unfounded gossip.”
“I’ll write only the truth.”
He smiles, probably appreciating my honesty. “Smart answer.” He leans, whispering in my ear, “I have a feeling, Miss Monteiro, that we will both try to break each other’s rule.”
He heads toward his car, enjoying this, thinking that he will acquire one more victory to his shelf.
One thing is sure, none of us can afford to lose this race, because anything could happen.
We are standing in awkward silence in front of each other in the airport hallway. It’s the last call for New York, and I keep looking nervously at my ticket. I crave more. But I need to think straight. It was just a weekend, a carnal need, nothing more. You’ll forget about him.
It’s not special.
It’s unreal. Chimerical.
You’ll save your job, and gain Nina’s trust, it’s all that matters. Not him.
“Well, goodbye Aaron.” I gather my dazzling smile, the one I perfected after so many years to hide my emotions.
“Goodbye, Elle.”
Our faces almost connecting, I anticipate the kiss that is yet to come, and my lips part willingly to have one last taste of sin, eager to break my own rule. But a wave of disappointment rushes through me when he aims for my cheek to kiss instead. I swallow my discontent.
A hint of a smile stretches on his lips, and I know it was part of his plan. “I’ll contact you for our date.”
Desire comes from frustration.
But Wolf hasn’t tasted my bitterness. It might be his game, but I know all about frustration. And I surely will not give him what he hankers to claim.
I’ll be his frustration.
I walk away from him to give my ticket to the flight attendant. Before disappearing through the boarding area, I look back one last time. When I see Wolf standing still, his charismatic aura circling him, a mix of spellbinding and conflicted, of darkness and triumph, I know he is an enigma I need to solve.
He was right.
Us, this is just the beginning.
The frog, The Knight, The Prince
“Aaron freaking LeBeau!”
Tania screams, attracting the attention of all of our coworkers who are now glaring at us. I shush her as she comes down from her desk and twirls her chair closer to mine. I’m usually working from home as much as I can, but I needed to fill out Tania with my epic weekend with Wolf—and confront my boss. Judging by her malicious smile, her you’re-so-naughty look, the interrogation had just begun. She pulls up her dark raven hair into a bun. Tania has a dazzling personality; she’s always wearing warm fall clothes that complement her alluring amber skin. She has been my only friend here. I’ve always been admiring, almost envious, of her no filter personality and how confident she is about her body and desires.
“How come you didn’t sleep with him?”She bites her pen, sinking into her seat.
“He only wants me for sex, Tania.”
“Is that so bad?” She scrutinizes me, a proud smirk curving on her lips. “I mean, if there is one person casual sex is worth it with, that would be Aaron LeBeau.” I roll my eyes. “Maybe casual sex is exactly what you need.”
“I don’t need it. I’d be insignificant for a man like Aaron, I’m just another trophy for him to claim,” I snort, having my fair share of the male testosterone. They race after you to bolster their ego, and once they accomplish their mission, you’re old news.
“Why did you accept his agreement, then? You’re not the kind of woman to act impulsively, nor to open to a guy so easily.”
“I guess it was revenge.” I shrug, knowing revenge wasn’t my only motive. Sure, I want revenge on what Stephan did to me. I won’t allow myself to be weak or sweet again, and getting the article is the proof I’ve changed. But Aaron awoke something different in me, a sort of new exhilarating freedom. I frown my eyebrows, too proud to admit that to her. “I was attracted to him, but it doesn’t mean anything.”
“Well, that’s the first time a man got your attention after—” She swallows and hesitates to continue, aware that Stephan is a sensitive topic for me. Even if Tania doesn’t know the whole truth, she witnessed my degradation over the months and saw me losing my spark. “You closed yourself. You need to feel the heat, someone that will make you feel like the goddess that you are.” I simper at her comment; she has her own unique way of giving advice. Playful, flirty, and yet she’s overprotective of the people she loves.
