“If he tries to hurt either of you, I’ll kill him,” I tell her calmly.

She flinches, frowning for a moment. “I don’t want you to go to prison,” she says.

“Neither do I,” I mutter. “But if it’s a choice between that and letting this bastard hurt the women I …”

The women I love, I was going to say, but there’s so much going on right now. I don’t know if I can drop a word with so much weighted significance before we’ve told Kayley before we have her blessing.

What if she never gives us her blessing?

I bite down, refusing to think about that.

“Don’t let me go to sleep,” she murmurs, breaking into my flowing thoughts.

“I’m getting pretty comfortable, too,” I say with a yawn.

I lie back and let my hands move lazily through her hair, over her shoulders. I cradle her closer to me, savoring the warmth of her body. There’s something magical about the closeness, something perfect. It feels like our bodies could fuse together any second in a conflagration of heat and need.

“Nah uh,” she moans, almost fully asleep now. “You can’t go to sleep.”

“I won’t,” I say, but a second yawn betrays me.

“Do you think we can really do it?” she murmurs.

“Do what?”

She wriggles, her body brushing up against mine.

I bite down on a hundred savage urges.

“Be together,” she says. “Me and you, forever. You don’t think all of this is going to fade away after Valentine’s weekend? Just think about it, Liam. I’ll be going back to college. You’ll be here. We haven’t even talked about that.”

“I’ll get an apartment near your college. I’ll split my time. You’ll live here with me in the summer and on semester breaks. There. Simple.”

“You’re joking,” she says, smiling through her tiredness. “You’re not just going to buy an apartment for me.”

“Yes, I am,” I tell her. “So get used to it. I’m not letting you go. It took me my whole damn life to find you. I’m not letting you get away that easily.”

She nuzzles even closer. I squeeze onto her, tightening my grip across her middle, pressing myself against her.

Somehow, we’ve contorted ourselves into a supine position on the couch, sinking into the cushions. Her ass cheeks grind against my manhood, making it twitch and stir to life.

Yet it’s also just so sweet to lie here with her, sinking even deeper into our closeness.

I’m conscious of how dangerous this is.

Kayley could walk down here and find us.

But I’m tired, my eyelids heavy. It’s too easy to imagine holding Lola like this after a long day with the children, both of us feeling tired from the joy of being parents, ready to sink into each other and drift into oblivion.

She moans lightly, suppressing a yawn. It’s such a gorgeous sound. Every sound she makes is like a magnet to me, drawing me closer to her, deeper into the spell she weaves.

My eyes close and then I snap them open a second later.

I need to tell Lola to move so that we can go to our separate bedrooms.

But instead, I hug her closer and then lean down, inhaling the scent of her hair deeply, drawing it inside of me so that she fills me up, ready to burst.

My eyes close again.

No, think about Kayley, a voice hisses inside of me.

I’ve never felt this weak before, this defenseless, but perhaps that’s what happens when a man meets the woman of his dreams. It’s easy to finally relax after so many years spent taut and tight and ready to uncoil violently at a moment’s notice. All those fights, all the business climbing, all the work, and now here she is my prize, my woman.

Mine.

I sink my face into her hair and close my eyes.

This time, I don’t fight it.

I let her breath carry me away on a sea the color of night.

“Um, what the hell is this?”

Kayley’s voice penetrates my hazy dream.

Fuck.

I open my eyes to find that Lola and I are still intertwined like we were last night, Lola’s body pressed up against mine. I feel her wriggling as she wakes up.

Soft morning sunlight fills the room, but there’s nothing soft about the way Kayley’s features seem to pinch up and draw inward.

“Hello?” she says, waving a vicious hand. “Can one of you please explain why my best friend and my dad are all cuddly on the couch?”

“Kayley?” Lola says, her voice still heavy with sleep. She sounds confused.

“Jesus Christ,” Kayley says, staring at me now with eyes I recognize well. It’s the same judgment she’s aimed at me the few times in her life we’ve had a serious disagreement. She looks ready to explode. “Did you have to do this, Dad? Did you really have to seduce my best friend? What, there aren’t any other women you can stick your dick in?”
