I turn to Kayley, ready to tell her I’m sorry for the show of affection. Things must be awkward enough for her already.

But she’s smiling even wider now, her engagement ring glinting in the last of the winter sunlight.

“You’re going to be great,” she tells Lola. “You’re going to blow the freaking roof off the place.”

Chapter Nineteen

Lola

The music thumps through the walls and seems to pound into my chest, joining my heartbeat. I’m standing backstage with a big lump in my throat.

My lips feel bone-dry despite the gallons of water I’ve drunk while waiting, and now I need to go to the bathroom, but I can’t go to the bathroom.

I’m on in two minutes.

I don’t know where Liam is. Kayley is in the club with Ryan somewhere. She said she might come and find me before I went on, but I can’t blame her if she got whisked away by her fiancé. They’ve been all over each other all night, as if joined by the hip, their eyes glued to each other in exuberant love.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath, leaning against the wall as sound people pass back and forward. I’ve got my guitar slung over my shoulder, the strap digging into my skin.

Everything seems hyperreal and like it could spin out of control any second.

I try to think of how wonderful today has been.

Kayley spent the morning and most of the afternoon with Ryan, so Liam and I were at the house alone. We took Hunter for a long walk around the grounds and when we came home and fell upon each other like starving animals.

He took me even harder than when I gave my virginity to him.

And then I took control, stunned at the sudden infusion of confidence that swirled into me.

I pushed him back against the bed and I climbed atop of him, grinding my naked and come-slick sex against him. I was achy from what we’d just done, but the look of wonder and captivation on his face energized me. I kept grinding, my pussy tingling, my soul singing.

My womb was screaming.

You can do this, you can be in charge, you can show him what you’re made of.

I sat down on his cock and started pumping my hips, unsure if I was even doing it right. But when I felt his hot, rock hard length sear up inside me to that close, special place – when I heard his deep animal groans and saw the way his lips shivered and twisted – I knew that I was riding him how he wanted to be ridden.

I began to bounce, somehow not self-conscious about the way my body moved with each thrust. That probably had something to do with how Liam’s hands roamed over all my curves, his gasps each time I clutched his huge cock between my legs.

We finished together, with me on top, my head thrown back and screaming like something had broken inside of me.

I felt free.

I felt powerful.

But now those feelings have slid away and I’m left here with a full bladder and empty resolve.

I look up and down the dark hallway. There’s a fire exit right at the end of it, in the opposite direction to the stage.

I could make a run for it right now, push out into the winter cold.

I’m wearing short black heels, tights, a knee-length black dress, and some dark eye makeup. I’d be cold out there. But surely that would be better than feeling trapped in here.

Maybe it really would be for the best. I could get the heck out of here before I embarrass myself.

I only finalized my song this morning, scrawling out the last of the lyrics in hurried handwriting.

I turn toward the fire exit.

Liam steps into my way, a wry smirk on his face. He’s wearing a tuxedo that hugs onto his muscular form tightly. His face is clean shaven, and his silver hair is swept to the side. He is the very embodiment of the word dashing.

I still can’t believe that he’s mine and that I’m his.

Forever.

“Liam,” I gasp. “I don’t think I can do this.”

“You can do it,” he says, stalking close to me. He reaches up and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, tickling, making me wish we were back home together. “You sang for me earlier. Just imagine it’s me watching, only me. Look into the crowd and find me. Focus on me. The rest of the world doesn’t exist. It’s only us, Lola. It’s always going to be us.”

“Stand somewhere obvious,” I groan, the pit in my belly getting deeper. “I’ll freak if I don’t see you out there.”

He leans down and presses his lips softly against mine, tingles dancing over my cheeks and down my body.

The club music is getting quieter.

I can hear the DJ announcing me.
