“You want me to follow you?” I say.

His tail wags. I guess that means yes.

The floor is cool against my bare feet, I walk down the hallway, wincing every time the floorboards creak.

It’s one thing to make noise when I’m in my room, but sneaking around at night is a whole other matter entirely.

He leads me to the top of the double staircase and then starts to pad down, making no noise at all. I’d lose him in the semidarkness – the illumination coming from the moon that shines through the skylight – if it wasn’t for his glorious golden coat.

I follow him around another corner, down the hallway, and then to a large modern kitchen. Lights blink on the moment I step inside, so bright I have to lift my hand and cover my eyes.

Hunter pads over to a drawer and noses up at it. The drawer had a padlock on.

I laugh, shaking my head.

“You want a treat?”

His head perks up and his tail wags quickly from side to side.

“I’m sorry,” I say. “I don’t have the key.”

He whines and trots over to me, nuzzling his head against my leg. I stroke him under the chin.

“I would,” I tell him. “I promise I’d sneak you one if I knew where the key was. But this isn’t my house, buddy.”

Hunter whines again, breaking my heart. I walk over to the padlock. Maybe it’s not locked, just closed, and I’ll be able to open it and sneak him a quick treat.

I know it’s wrong of me to be snooping around, but there’s just something so soul-melting about the puppyish noises this big dog makes.

My breath catches in my throat when a cough comes from behind me.

I spin with a gasp, half-expecting to find some freaky version of Cupid here, his arrow tipped with fire instead of a love potion.

But it’s him.

Liam’s tattooed arms throb at his sides, every line of his muscles well-defined and visible to me in the tank top.

I can see the tops of his pectorals, round and powerful, his inked skin making my insides warm and difficult to ignore.

I gasp and move instinctively away from the drawer.

He smirks briefly, his eyes flashing.

With rage? With lust?

Lust? a voice cackles within me. As if this man would ever want you, you silly girl.

“I’m sorry,” I murmur. “He was just whining and I—and I—it’s no excuse. I don’t know what came over me.”

He stares hard for a few moments, making me want to run away and toward him at the same time. My whole body feels like it could erupt with hot fireworks. I almost scream just to relieve some of the pressure.

“There’s no need for apologies,” he growls, his voice deep and leaden with what can only be fury. “Hunter, here, boy.”

The dog pads over and sits at Liam’s feet, making him look like a hunter with his trusty hound for a moment. Something deep inside me gives a thrum and the crazy thought arises in me that we’d make incredible babies together, Liam and me.

They’d have his bright eyes and solid build, and even if I’m not as attractive as him, they’d be beautiful. I’d love them. I know what it’s like to grow up without parents, so I’d make up for that with the life we create together.

I push that absurd notion deep down. It makes no sense. I shouldn’t be thinking stuff like this after knowing him for a few hours.

He’d laugh at how silly I was if I told him even a fifth of the madness whirring through me.

“What a well-trained dog,” I murmur nonsensically into the silence.

It seems he’s content to just stare at me, his eyes boring into me, making me feel trapped.

Feeling trapped shouldn’t make my body tingle like this, my sex getting wet and achy, my panties feeling as if they’re rubbing against my clit even if I’m standing still.

“Hmm,” Liam says.

“I’m sorry,” I say again, my voice a little sharper now.

What does he want me to do, dance for him to make up for it?

I made a mistake, but he’s looking at me as if he’d kill me without thinking twice about it.

“Hmm,” he says again.

“Jesus, Liam,” I snap without thinking. “Is that all you’re capable of saying?”

His eyebrows twitch and his smirk does the same, as though Hunter has just done a new trick. This time, his smirk doesn’t fade away.

He stalks toward me, Hunter padding next to him.

“You’re a feisty little thing, aren’t you?” he growls, getting closer, his musky scent wafting over me, surrounding me. I don’t want to escape. “I’m not the one sneaking around somebody else’s property the last time I checked. Maybe you should speak to me with some respect.”

I’m imagining the flare of desire in his eyes, misconstruing the rumbling in his chest for something other than anger. I’m seeing things that aren’t there, hidden needs within him that are inventions within my hungry psyche.
