He grabbed her around the waist and pulled her into his arms. “You’re damned sexy, Dr. Whitman.”

She wouldn’t even correct him this time. He could call her Dr. Whitman until his dying day, as long as he delayed his dying day by turning himself over to Tempest.

Closing her eyes, she lifted her face for his kiss. When it didn’t come, she opened one eye to find Max searching her face.

She thrust out her bottom lip. “What happened to that kiss?”

“You are so beautiful.” His fingers dabbled lightly over her nose and mouth. “I’m imprinting you on my memory.”

“You’re already imprinted here in my heart.” She tapped her chest, tight with emotion.

He tossed the menu over his shoulder. “It’s a little early for dinner anyway. I think I want my dessert first—forget the whipped cream.”

Just when they got comfortable under the covers, her phone rang. As always these days, the sound caused a shaft of fear to plow through her heart.

She rolled to the side and swept it from the nightstand. She met Max’s eyes over the glowing display and peeled her tongue from the roof of her mouth. “It’s Cody.”

“Answer it.”

“What’s up, Cody? Are you okay?”

“Besides a string of crazy things happening in Snow Haven ever since you and that cyborg showed up, I’m fine. And you’re gonna be fine, too.”

“Why? What happened?”

“I got you a lab.”

Chapter Seventeen

“Where? How? What?” She bounced on the bed. “I love you. You’re the best brother in the world.”

“Wow, before I was the scourge of mankind for mixing you up in my illegal activities. Now I’m freakin’ hero material.”

“Cut to the chase, Cody.” Max threw off the covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed.

“You could’ve told me I was on Speaker, Ava.” Cody coughed. “Hey, man, I totally meant that cyborg comment as a compliment.”

Max grunted. “Whatever. Spill.”

“That one guy I knew who was out of town got back to me when he heard about the money involved. He knows I’m no snitch.”

“Which is coming in very handy right now.” Ava’s voice squeaked. She could barely contain her excitement. “Go on.”

“Anyway, he has a place that he abandoned because the DEA was onto him.”

Max interrupted. “Does the DEA know about this place?”

“No. My friend abandoned the place when the DEA started tailing him. Nobody knows about the lab except him and his partner, and now us.”

Max asked, “Where’s his partner?”

“Uh, dude’s in jail.”

“Great.” Ava nibbled the side of her thumb. “Where is this place, Cody? Is it ready to go?”

“I already have the key and the code and someone’s delivering all the chemicals you need as we speak. I gave the guy your money already, including the dude who got the chemicals, and I kept my cut. You said I could keep a percentage, right?”

“We did.” Max walked to the window and peered through the blinds. “How are we going to get the key from you? I don’t want you near the hotel right now.”

“I don’t think I’m being followed. Haven’t noticed anything since the break-in.”

“Humor the cyborg.”

Cody choked. “A friend of mine works at the Haven Brewery in town. Her name’s Dina. I’ll leave it with her—no questions asked.”

“Got it.” Max grabbed the hotel pad of paper by the phone. “Now, where is this lab?”

Cody gave them detailed directions to a place south of Salt Lake City, along with the code for the door. “You have to follow these directions exactly because you’ll never find the place using your GPS or a map. As far as I can tell, it’s in the middle of nowhere.”

“That’s exactly what we’re looking for.” Ava took a twirl around the room. “Cody?”

“Yeah?”

“Have I ever told you you’re the best brother in the world?”

“Yeah, like five minutes ago. Look, I don’t know what you two are up to, but be careful. And, cyborg?”
