Hugh looked at him vexed. “What could you possibly want with her?”

“There’s something about her that attracts a man’s attention. Don’t you think?”

“You think so?” A man’s attention? For God’s sake! She was just dynamite!

“She’s not really pretty, is she?” Now he looked attentively at Hugh. “But she’s so charismatic, you can’t take your eyes off her!”

“I haven’t noticed.” She seemed not only charismatic, she made him so hot, that he thought he’d explode!

“There are a number of gentlemen around thinking of courting her.”

Never! Never! Over his dead body! “Good for them!” He shrugged.

“And her money enhances the prospects.”

Oh, hell! She stood at the mercy of these vultures of society and he could not protect her!

“Amazing, isn’t it.” He replied as if distracted. “I’m leaving now, Ashton.?

?

“Fine.” He continued looking around. “How about fencing tomorrow? Even though you haven’t been fencing as fiercely as you used to.” He jested

“Oh, I’ll be fierce tomorrow, be sure of that!” and Hugh walked towards the entrance door.

CHAPTER 12

She had not shown up in any social event since the ball at Sheffield. She had not received him when he called. He would go crazy. Obviously, she avoided him. He got torn apart with want of her. Lady or no lady; she belonged to him. That longed for kiss in the dark room showed she remained the same candid, generous woman he had known. He wanted more. He would have it!

Sarah had been working a lot. She had put in long hours in the bank and she would bring work home to do in the library after dinner. She strained herself so she would sleep dreamlessly at night. It proved effective, except that the thought of him would not leave her. Ever.

Saturday afternoon and she appeared buried in papers at her desk in the library. A knock on the door. She hoped it would not be him again trying to visit.

“Lady Wilkins.” Evans said when admitted in the room. “Lord Hawkmore to see you.”

She sighed. The man proved to be tireless. “Please tell Lord Hawkmore I’m not-“

“Thank you, Evans.” Hugh entered the library. “Lady Wilkins can say directly to me she’s not home.”

Sarah looked at him affronted. He looked impossibly gorgeous in dark suit, towering over poor Evans, as he gave his gloves and hat to the butler.

Evans looked at her inquiringly. She nodded slightly. He left.

“How dare you?” She asked angrily. How would she keep him out of her mind if he showed up all the time?

Two weeks the maximum he succeeded in waiting. He could take it no longer. He had to see her!

“You did not give me much choice.” He shrugged. “Besides, I need to talk to you.”

What could he possibly want form her, besides the unmistakable, naturally?

“Say it and go.” She crossed her arms and waited.

He put his hands behind him. “Lady Wilkins, I came to present my formal marriage proposal.” He looked at her with his beautiful piercing eyes.

Sarah looked at him dumbfounded and wordless. “You must be crazy!”

He lifted his eyebrows, as if he had said something plain. “How so? I need a wife and an heir.” He spread his arms. “Since we’re rather…acquainted, it’d be a sensible match.”
