Being trapped in such way, Sarah had no choice but to take his arm and let him guide her through the lush greens.

As she looked around at the best society gathered there, she saw all eyes on them, speculatively. Fir

st, the ball and now that. It got too awkward.

“I don’t want to be seen in your company, Lord Hawkmore.”

“Too late for that, I fear. Everyone’s looking.” He said smugly. “And call me Hugh, Sarah!” He placed his hand over hers to show more intimacy.

She stared up at him. His piercing eyes were on her, full of intimate messages. They made her melt inside terribly. His warm hand on her gloved one made things no better.

“Well, they’re going to get the wrong impression.”

As far as he was concerned they would get the right impression. Very right, indeed. He wanted the vultures away from her and all other suitors too.

“They may not be that wrong.” He said innocently.

“In my opinion, they are. Totally so!”

They started walking away from the crowd in the party. And they walked in silence for a long time.

“When would you like to get married?” He asked as if all remained in accord.

“I am not marrying you!” Irritation surging in her. “The answer had been no, remember?”

She had denied him twice already, which maddened him. There would not be a third time, not if could avoid it. “Oh, but you will, Sarah.” Velvet tone caressing her. “Imagine us together in bed every night.” The thought made his body stir. He would take her to bed every night, every day, everywhere.

A shot of sensation went through her body. The image of them together, in marriage lock, sounded all too tempting. She decided to cool down the atmosphere a bit.

“Why on Earth would I marry you, Lord Hawkmore?”

“For my title, of course! You’d be a countess.” If she wanted reason, she’d have it.

“I have a title, my lord. And it opens all the drawing room doors for me. It’s enough!”

Damn her for not being greedy. “For my protection, then.”

“I can hire footmen.” She said as if he would be just one of them.

“So, for my…say…skills in bed?” He looked at her meaningfully.

Her forefinger placed on her chin, her eyebrows lifted as she stared at his piercing dark eyes. “Well, I suppose I could have those without marriage, as we both know.”

Blast. Blast. Blast! She proved to be too smart to reason with. He fumed!

She surrounded him and posted herself right in front of him. “You should re-marry someone in your rank, my lord.” She bent her head back to meet his dark eyes.

“I’ve had enough of arranged marriages, my lady.” Their eyes immersed in each other’s.

“Then choose a girl who’s agreeable to you.” She insisted.

His expression closed a hard look in his piercing eyes. “I cannot touch any other woman!” His hoarse voice angry. “I haven’t been able to touch another woman since you left.” He raked his hair with his hand. “You spoiled me for any other woman in the universe! Do you understand?”

Hearing that felt like taking a powerful aphrodisiac. He had not been with another woman as much as she could not let another man touch her.

This felt too overwhelming for her. She had never heard of a man who would go so long without company. She had to put some distance between them. Now! She curtsied and went back to the crowd.

He watched her as her skirts dangled as a bell around her; the delectable nape of her neck going farther.
