As Sarah arrived home, she felt a surge of nausea and ran to their chambers.

Hugh looked at her concerned and followed her. He entered the room in large steps. He dismissed his valet and her lady’s maid, who were waiting for them.

He came near her as she finished using the chamber pot. “Sarah? What happened?” His eyebrows pleated, his eyes serious.

She sat on their bed. “Looks like your baby is in a hurry, my lord!”

He gaped and looked at her for several seconds, amazed. He felt his heart swelling. “My goodness, Sarah!” He knelt before her on the carpet between her knees, embraced her by the waist and rested his head on her lap. “My Sarah is going to have my baby!” He went to cloud nine.

She smiled shining at him. “We worked hard on it, did we?”

“I enjoyed every minute!” He sprinkled kisses in her abdomen.

“I can’t complain either!” She joked and immersed her fingers in his jet-black hair.

“Oh, but that’s really unfair, Lady Hawkmore!”

She giggled. “Alright. I’ll admit to some…participating!”

“You will, won’t you?” As he knelt there with his nose buried on her abdomen, smelling her womanly scent, he thought that now she had what she seemed to be after: a baby. Maybe she would not want him to…she would not want him to touch her. Oh, God! If it appeared to be what she wanted, he would respect her wish. He would be thrown in hell, sleeping by her side and not able to…to, oh!

CHAPTER 16

Hugh behaved strangely, Sarah thought a couple of weeks later. He came to sleep after she went to sleep and woke up before she did. He slept on the other side of the bed. They were doing everything they had been doing before, but he avoided all physical contact with her. And she wondered what had come to pass. Did he think pregnant women could not…? He had told her that his four sisters talked when they thought he did not listen. He surely must know that there would be no problem in… If she tried to make a move, he would shy away and even leave the room. She became worried. What if he found a mistress? If he had, her heart would be ripped in bleeding pieces. She missed him, severely!

Losing his mind! He almost lost his mind. He paced the library restlessly. Being near her, sleeping by her side and not touching her devastated his guts! He wished he could talk to her about his doubts, but he felt awkward. So, he tried to avoid her presence. If he so much as looked at her he felt such a wrenching need for her, that it felt unbearable.

He heard a knock on the door. “Come in.” He stopped and waited.

Sarah. She dressed one of the austere dresses she wore for work. Instead of cooling him down, it only made him want to tear it from her.

“Good evening, Hugh.” She stared directly at him.

He sat behind his desk to prevent himself from going near her. “Is there any problem?”

She lifted her chin and laced her hands in front of her. “Yes.”

“What is it?”

“You.” She eyed him. “You’re behaving weird these days. Are you alright?”

No! I am not alright! I want you like crazy, but I do not think you want me now that you have what you wanted. “Yes, I am. Why do you ask?” His eyes were on the desk, lest he lost control.

She paced to him. He saw her approaching and felt like apocalypse coming. She stopped beside his chair. His breath caught.

“Are you sick or something?” She touched his forehead as if to see if he had fever.

“I don’t think so.” Oh, her hand on him, so delicious. The fever not to be found on his forehead, for pity’s sake!

Her hand slid down his stubbed face in a tender caress. “Good.” She replied, hand going to his neck.

He would not resist. Abruptly he stood up and put some survival distance from her. “If you excuse me.” He hurried from the library.

Sarah looked at his tall back at a loss at what to think. She went up to her escritoire and immersed herself in work. She had been going to work later because of her morning sickness and there had been a lot to do.

More days went by and Sarah got sad with Hugh’s indifference. She did not know what happened and felt dead afraid that he’ had found a mistress. If so, his mistress would not want for ardent nights.

That night she awoke needing the chamber pot, her waters were running free those days. Hugh sound asleep, but he held her close, unconsciously. The feel of his body so delicious after so much time. A pity she had to get up. Silently, she put on the oil-lamp and went about her business in the dressing room. When she came back, she saw him awake.
