She opened her eyes slowly. “Oh?” she looked at the sun in the west. “Oh, my!” She rubbed her eyes. “I slept!” She sat up.

“Oh, Sarah, I almost went mad with worry!” He sat on the couch.

“I am sorry.” She stood up in an attempt to shake the drowsiness off.

He stood too, came to her taking her shoulders and looked down at her as if it would be the last time.

“I wanted to come here again.” She explained looking deep in his dark eyes. “I did not have the opportunity before and when you went to inspect the estate, I thought-“

“Sarah, Sarah!” He held her. “Don’t do this to me ever again!” He sprinkled kisses in her face. “I cannot bear the simple notion of losing you!”

She held him as well. “Oh, no. I intent to live very long!”

“Please, do! Because I want to spend a long, long time loving you!”

She looked up at him, wide eyes. “You love me?”

“Oh, Sarah! Don’t tell me you never realized I am madly in love with you!”

She gaped. “I n-never thought-“ She put one hand in his face, blind with emotion. “I-I had been prepared to love you for both of us!”

“Sarah, my love!” He held her tight. “How can you love me?” He undid her hair and entangled his fingers in it. “I was your lord, I took your virginity, I made you pregnant!”

“I don’t care! I don’t care!” She rested her face on his chest. “I would not have changed a second of it!”

“My love!” He said tenderly.

“I imagined you could never love me, as I stood so below you!” Her chin on his chest, she lifted her eyes to him

“I think that first day in my library I saw you and I was doomed!” He remembered the feelings imprinted in him. “I could not take you out of my mind for a minute since then.”

“Neither could I.” She said dimply.

“I felt so devastated when you left.” He kissed her hair.

“It almost destroyed me to leave.” She confessed. “And I wanted that child so much! It’d have been the only gift I’d have from you!”

“In those years I came here several times.” He caressed her hair. “Here you showed me what happiness meant!”

“I could never forget those days either.”

“We managed to start over, did we not?” He held her face. “You made it possible, all of it!”

A sad look came to her eyes and she lowered them. “I had to make hard choices, Hugh. And I’d prepared myself to live an arid life without you!”

“I would not have left you alone, Sarah, don’t you know that?” He lowered his head to kiss her ardently.

“Yes, I could see as much!” She said when he lifted his head again.

“I looked for you, Sarah! Like crazy! The bow street runners could not find a trace of you!”

“Oh, really?” She had never imagine he would spend time or money looking for her.

“Then I got so angry at you that I gave up! I’d never have found you anyway; you’d changed your name after you married.”

“Oh, but you found me! You came to call right on me!”

“And after I’d found you, nothing would make me let you go again!”
