“I can tell from your reception however that you had not moved on, not given up on me. You have no idea what it meant to me to be greeted as such by you. To see you running towards me in that way made all the past months vanish.”

I gave him a sardonic chuckle, “Ever the poet Omar.”

“I only speak the truth my love. As I healed, I was given liberties to dwell in peace and solitude. I spent many hours simply thinking and dreaming of you and us and when we could once again be reunited. I’ve made some choices and I wish to discuss much with you as soon as possible.”

“Of course. Why don’t we make an appearance and I can say hi to everyone, and then let’s leave. You have no idea how much I ache to be in your arms again.”

His entire face lit up and he spread his arms wide, beckoning me to him. I leaned in and he wrapped me up into a tight embrace. He stroked my back and kissed my forehead. “Me too my love. You are my every thought.” His chest rumbled with inward amusement.

“Even if I try and banish you from my mind, I’ve found it impossible.”

I nodded against his warm chest and continued to wallow in bliss at being so near him again. His scent filled my head and my body did as it always did whenever I was near him. “Me too Omar.” We were silent for a short while and then a thought burst into my head.

“Why would you want to banish me from your thoughts?”

His tone was serious, “Immediately after the injury I wasn’t certain if I would ever walk again. I was not prepared to take you into my life as half a man, or a man in a wheelchair. And so, I considered a different life, a life apart from you.”

I shrugged within his embrace, “I wouldn’t care. You know that right?”

His voice was full of sarcastic amusement, “You would care if I were not able to service you in the fashion you’ve grown accustomed.”

I jerked away and gaped at him, “What happened Omar? Was it that bad?” I looked down at his lap and his leg, but I couldn’t tell what was different or how he’d been injured. “Did your? Um, did it get hurt too?” I shook my head and then stammered my way through a quick addition, “Not that I care. Don’t get me wrong, and you are wrong in thinking that is my main attraction to you. I mean, yeah, I like the sex, but, well, what I mean is…”

He lifted half his face in his customary grin, and reached out to quiet me with a finger on my chin.

“I am fine darling and as soon as I considered a life without you in it, I evicted those thoughts just as quickly!”

“What happened? Please tell me?” I plead.

“I will show you my scars this evening. Will you join me for dinner and stay with me tonight?”

I sort of shrieked my response. “Of course silly! Try and get me off of you, just try! I dare you to try and get rid of me now.”

He laughed and for the first time I could tell he was lightening up, “Ahhh my love—that is a dare I will not entertain. I should seek that we never separate again. Ever.”

I exhaled dramatically, “Why are you still dodging the question? Why aren’t you telling me what happened?”

He frowned, “What happened really is not important. I was very injured, the entire leg was damaged, even up into my hip joint. It was broken in three places and the ankle was shattered. There were many surgeries. I am full of titanium hardware now. The doctors were unsure if they could even save the limb.”

I tried, and failed at hiding my shock. “They did though, I mean, that’s your real leg?”

He nodded, “Yes, I am once again whole and as you saw, I can walk. My goal is to be cane free by the time we officially wed.”

I leaned in and kissed him passionately, “I love what a warrior you are Omar. You meet every challenge head on, undaunted by other’s opinions. You have all my respect and love and just so you know, I think I kinda worship you.”

I blushed crimson and looked down at my lap. “At least, in my own head I think of you as a sort of god among mortal men.”

“Ahhh my sweet Anna. I think the same of you.” He gripped roughly on my chin, reminding me of his dominance, and my center twitched.

I sighed and my eyelids sagged shut, “Oh Omar, what you do to me. You have no idea.”

He took my hand and set it over his lap, at his groin, and he grinned mischievously, “This is what you do to me, Goddess.”

CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

The party was unmemorable apart from being next to Omar yet again. He sat while I mingled, and I noticed my dad talking to him. I watched for a bit, but it seemed as if they were both smiling and getting along and when my dad left his company, he stretched out a hand and they shook on something, both of them nodding in agreement. So, I left it alone and figured Omar didn’t need me to defend him or wrangle my father. They were grown men and could sort it by themselves. I was also fully aware of the fact I was not responsible for my father’s attitude or language. That was between him and Omar if they so choose.

My mom was as bright and shiny as I’d ever seen her and after I cornered her and asked why, she confessed that she and dad were kind of back together. After that night at Thanksgiving he’d joined her in the master bedroom and they’d talked well into the night. They’d cleared some of the bad air between them and he’d again promised to continue to change and try harder for both of us. Then they’d made love.
