Sassy

* * *

Humming happily under my breath, my smile broadened when I saw my husbands coming for me. Sitting on one of the benches at the town picnic while they waited on me hand and foot amused me so. My gruff Clive and my sweet William had both turned especially protective ever since I began increasing.

“I brought you lemonade.” Clive placed the glass down in front of me before claiming the seat on my right.

“And I brought you pie.” The winning smile that went with William’s offering was a sharp contrast to Clive’s grumpy face and yet I loved each of their expressions equally, though for different reasons.

“Thank you both,” I said primly, beaming at each of them in turn.

Other ladies and their husbands were in similar circumstances all around, children were running under foot, and there was a general air of happiness surrounding the whole town. I still could not believe how lucky I was. When I came to Bridgewater, all I had truly wanted was to be safe, yet here I was in love and well loved in turn, and with our first child on the way.

Over the past few months, I had even begun to make some friends about town. I waved to Maddy and her husbands as they walked by – we had bonded over being mail order brides. All of the women were so friendly and, just like my husbands, none of them cared about my past. I had found everything I wanted and so much more.

There is something very special about Bridgewater. Maybe it’s the mountain air, maybe it’s the town itself, or maybe it’s just these wonderful men. All I know is, I never want to leave.
