“Just hear me out?—”

“Absolutely not.” His dark brows drew together.

“Maybe I’m just overthinking.” My lungs expelled a breath as I stared up at the ceiling.

“I’m going to think of something. I’ll talk with the others. Everything is going to be okay.”

I wasn't convinced that was true. This year had been non-stop turmoil, and I was exhausted.

“Mhm.” Now I was the one who was stressed.

“Find anything interesting up there?”

“Nope.” I dropped my head back down. “But if your offer from before still stands, I think I’ll take you up on it.” I needed a distraction.

Sebastian donned a smile, his eyes sparkling as he shot up from the chair. He carried me with him, crushing his lips into mine as he moved us to his bed.

Chapter

Thirty-Seven

“You’re making me miss training with Sawyer.” I threw my elbow backwards, jamming it into Sebastian's ribcage to try and release his hold on me. He grunted at the force and loosened his grip just enough so I could drop down between his arms.

“Am I going too hard on you?”

Rising to my full height, I spun and raised my weapon in defense. “A little bit, yeah,” I choked the words out.

“Good.”

My eyebrows drew together, then I lunged at him, my dagger angled at his heart. Before he could adjust himself, the clang of metal pierced my ears as my blade collided with his armor.

My arm fell and I smiled at my victory, sheathing the dagger in the wrapping around my thigh.

Sebastian dropped his guard, relaxing his stance. “I thought you said I was going too hard on you. What the fuck was that?” he panted.

I smiled knowingly. “I lied. Sawyer and I worked a lot on battle techniques while you were gone. Not to sound arrogant, but I've become pretty talented when it comes to combat.” Iwas confident that if I were presented with a real opponent, that I’d have a good chance at success.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. “You're proving that claim true. Before we finish up, how about one more attempt at wielding your magic?” he panted.

We'd been bouncing back and forth between sparring and harnessing my powers, sometimes putting the two together. Sebastian had been pushing me a little harder than usual, but I knew he just wanted to prepare me.

“Fine,” I agreed. “One more, but then I'm done. I can't be late for the armoring ceremony.”

“Deal.”

“I'm out of ideas though, so you gotta give me something.” I brushed the braid off of my shoulder, my fingers sticking to the sweat soaked pieces that had split out of it.

Sebastian tapped a finger to his chin. “Compel me to kiss you.”

A laugh released from deep within me. “What are we, teenagers?”

“No, but youaremuch younger than me.”

“Oh whatever.” I rolled my eyes. “I don't want to use my magic to coerce you into doing anything sexual with me.”

“Who said anything about sex?”

I cocked my head, raising a brow. “Kissing always seems to turn into something more between us.”
