“I know that Hubert retired several years ago due to poor health. And even though he has an older daughter, he transferred his powers to his younger son.”
“Rutherford.”
“Exactly. After the death of his son, he’s in a pickle. He’s too old to fight you,” Sage said.
“I see.”
“What are you going to do?” Sage followed me into the corridor.
“There’s someone I need to see.”
“Who?”
I stayed silent, heading for the main staircase then went straight to the fourth floor and turned right. Sage followed me as I searched the doors. One of them clearly was marked, although the letter ‘T’ Mayer referred to, resembled a cross.
I stopped in front of the door and knocked lightly with my knuckles. I did not want to alert him to trouble waiting on the other side.
“What’s this about?” Sage continued, getting on my nerves.
Again, I ignored him.
The door opened just a crack, revealing a pair of familiar eyes in the dark room. I punched the door open and stepped inside. Erin was on the floor, holding his nose with both hands.
“Ty, shit! Ty, I can explain.”
He made an attempt to crawl away on the floor, and I placed my boot on his back. “Start talking,” I said.
Sage checked the hall, and immediately locked the door.
“No! Don’t! It’s not my fault! I didn’t have a choice! You know how it is. It was an order. I had to. They knew I was from the black clan.”
“How much did they pay you to betray your clan?” I grabbed him by the throat, making him stand.
“They didn’t! I swear! I had no choice! Things got bad, man. I told you not to get involved with the council’s business. You didn’t listen. They’re panicking in the capital. Things got really rough.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“They only wanted me to tell the white clan what happened.”
“Lies! I bet they were hoping the clan would ambush us.” Sage interjected.
“Go on.” I pressed harder against his neck.
“What choice did I have?” he whined.
“Keep talking.”
“They want the other clans to come together.”
“What were your orders?” I continued.
“They said to stay until I had something to report back.”
“Did you talk to Hubert?” I leaned closer to him.
“Please, don’t! I tried, but he’s too sick.”
“Don’t believe him. He’s lying. He was probably ordered to harm Lady Alina.”
