“I mean it, Savannah. You need to concentrate on yourself. I’m coming back. Everything will be fine. I promise.”

“Be safe out there, bro. Don’t take any stupid risks.”

Savannah left the door to the bathroom cracked open slightly as she unabashedly listened to Logan and Max’s conversation. She knew she shouldn’t be eavesdropping but she just wasn’t ready to go out there. She was hiding in the bathroom because she knew as soon as she left she’d have to say goodbye to Max.

Please let him come home safely.

No amount of reassurance that he could handle himself could make her feel better about Max going.

She knew he had to do this. In his eyes, it was the only way. Even though she didn’t agree with him, Max was a proud man. Feeling like a failure would eat away at him. So she stayed quiet.

“She’s been in the bathroom a long time,” Max said in a hushed voice. Savannah had to lean forward to hear him. “Think she’s okay?”

“You’re leaving for God knows where, to do who knows what, right when she needs you the most,” Logan snapped. “Of course, she’s not okay.”

She tensed at Logan’s words. She didn’t want to be the reason the two of them fought. She knew Logan was still mad at Max despite the truce they’d come to last night.

There was a moment of silence, and she thought she was going to have to go out there and calm things down when she heard someone sigh.

“Sorry, bro. I just don’t like you doing this,” Logan explained.

“I know. You think I’m happy about it? I don’t want to go. I put it off as long as I could.”

More silence. She stood there, tense.

“She hasn’t said much about me going.”

“Probably because you only just sprung it on us and now you’re going,” Logan grumbled. “How do you expect her to react?”

“Logan, I need you to be okay with this.”

“How the fuck can I be okay with this?”

Under other circumstances, it might have been funny listening to them argue in hushed whispers. There were some whispered words she couldn’t hear. She moved closer to the door and peered out. Logan still looked pissed off, but he was listening to whatever Max said. In the end, he looked away with a nod. Max turned towards the bathroom door. She made herself stand and walk to the mirror. She turned on the tap and gathered some water in her hand as he knocked on the door.

“Savi?”

“Yep?” she asked.

“Can I come in?”

“Sure.” She was surprised by how steady her voice was. She splashed the cool water over her face, closing her eyes as he drew closer. He stood behind her, placing his wide hands on her hips. He just stood there, not saying a word. Finally, she realized he was waiting for her to open her eyes.

She made herself open them and she stared at him in the mirror. He was so handsome. He still took her breath away, even after nearly two years of marriage. What would she ever do without him?

She wouldn’t have to find out. He was coming back.

“Of course, I’m coming back.”

Whoops, she hadn’t realized she’d said that out loud.

He squeezed her hips. “The two of you seem to have very little faith in my ability to take care of myself. Nothing is going to happen to me.”

God, she hoped not. She couldn’t bear to lose him.

“Trace just pulled up,” Logan said joining them in the bathroom. “You better go if you’re gonna make your flight.”
