“Yeah?” I threw up my hands. “And what’s men like me?”

She flipped me off. “Fucking losers.”

I saw red. She couldn’t just walk away from me, from us. We were so close, all I had to do was have one last talk with her, explain to her who I was, what I was, and how she could be with me forever, and then…

I lifted a foot and then another and I was sprinting toward her. She turned just as I collided with her middle. I hoisted her over my shoulder and turned back to take her to the car.

“Put me down, you psycho!” she screamed as she kicked her legs wildly.

“Not until you listen to me!”

She pounded her small fists against my back, but I wasn’t letting her go. “Nooo!” she howled.

I walked to my car and set her down. We stared at each other furiously. Our chests heaving, tears spilling from our eyes, and our hearts shattering.

And then, Scout gasped. Her eyes went wide, and she clutched her chest. She dropped to her knees and began to choke. I dropped beside her and reached for her.

“Scout? What’s going on? Can you hear me? Scout!” I shouted, shaking her body. She passed out, and her eyes glazed over. Everything around me started to spin. Blood pulsed in my ears as it hit me. I dropped my head to her chest and listened.

Her heart had stopped beating.

She was dead.

Scout had just died in my arms. Out of nowhere. She was just talking to me, kicking and hitting me. She was crying. We were talking. And then…

I clutched her limp body to me, sobbing over it. I would never get the chance to win her back. Her body jolted in my arms. She gasped deeply and began to scream.

I jumped, and she fell out of my arms, still screaming bloody murder.

How?

Her mouth was twisted in agony as she screamed, and her irises were red.

My blood ran cold for only a moment before I collapsed beside her and took action.

While I’d never seen it before, I’d heard a million times what happened to a Bloodborn as they turned. Scout needed blood. But… I’d always been told it had to be a vampire. Already turned; another Bloodborn. Would my blood suffice her need? I didn’t have time to think, because without blood, she’d die.

I pulled my pocketknife out and popped it. I slid my jacket up my arm and sliced my arm. Reaching for her neck, I propped her up and raised my bleeding arm to her mouth.

At first, she continued to scream, but then my blood dripped into her mouth, and she calmed.

We made eye contact, but she didn’t seem to see me. She seemed to be looking through me as she lapped and then began to suck on my arm. I gasped when suddenly she bit down. Her fangs were embedded deep into my skin.

Fangs.

My vision blurred as she continued to drink, but I didn’t care, because I knew we’d figure things out. None of the other shit mattered anymore.

Scout was a Bloodborn.
