“The dirty movie theater?” I nodded.

“I don’t partake.” There was a moment where we stared at each other before she began to laugh, which turned into a full-belly laughter as she bent over and held her stomach.

I slid off the table and chuckled. “See, this is why I didn’t want to tell you!” The lie rolled so easily off my tongue. She put up her hand to get me to stop talking.

“Well, I hope you have this weekend off.”

“Why?”

“So you can come to my Halloween party.”

“I’ll figure something out. What day is Halloween?”

“Friday. You better be there,” she urged, and together, we started back to my car.

“I’ll be there.” I swallowed the lump in my throat, only for it to knot in my stomach. Aleida would return on Friday.
