Horror filled my throat. I wanted to scream. What had Desi done? Had he murdered someone else?
“We have you on camera outside Frank’s convenience store with your friends, giving your state-issued driver’s license to a minor, who then used it to purchase copious amounts of alcohol.”
“Seriously?” Desi laughed. “This is what you want to do on Thanksgiving?”
They nodded solemnly. “It is. That minor threw a house party and crashed his parents’ car. Now, if you’ll come with us.”
With a sigh louder than the one I had given when they announced his charges, he turned around and let them put handcuffs on him. He was barefoot as well as shirtless. The neighbors were going to love that.
“Can I get him some clothes?” I asked.
“At least my boots.” Desi looked toward them.
They nodded. “Boots are fine.”
I hurried back to my bedroom. They allowed me to help him put them on. It was freezing. The October winds had long since gone, and we were now waiting for winter.
Desi gave me one last look, making sure to roll his eyes, grin, and then wink as they shoved his head down and into the back of their car. The officers gave me a quick salute as they left. A moment later, I felt something wet on my nose. I looked up at the bright gray sky and realized that it had started to snow.
That was two things I had missed out on today. Experiencing the first snow of the season with Desi. And telling him I was in love with him too.
