Her.

“Uncaring. I was raised in this world. People come and go. They do crime and then bad things happen to them. I’m just part of the cycle.”

“But what if someone comes after you?”

“No one would dare. My last name keeps me pretty safe.”

“Amato?”

“That’s the one.” The bitterness seeped out slightly in my tone. “It has its occasional perks.”

“Were you doing this before we met?”

“No. I wasn’t lying about that. I sold a lot of weed. Which would probably land me more jail time than anything else.” I smirked. She asked me questions until finally she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, leaving me to finish the drive.

The sun was starting to peek out from the darkness when I pulled into a hotel off the freeway. I parked and sat back in my seat, watching her sleep. She had been crying before I had picked her up. Her eyes were still puffy and her nose just a little pink. My heart fell slightly, knowing that I was the cause of her tears. I had done that to her.

But no more.

I clicked my seatbelt off and shook her slightly, rousing her.

“Are we here to kill the guy?” she asked groggily.

“You seem to be almost excited to do this.”

“No!”

“Sure.” I grinned. “But no. We’re just at the hotel. Let’s go see about a room for the next few days.” There were plenty of rooms, and I offered a credit card to get us booked.

“Is having a card with your name on it safe? What if they trace us?” she asked as soon as we entered the room. I slipped off my boots and flopped onto the bed.

“They won’t.”

“How are you so sure?”

“Scout, stop worrying.” I patted the empty spot beside me. “Come, lie down, we’ll take a long nap, and then we’ll get going later.”

“To Yorick?” She slipped off her shoes and laid beside me. I rolled and pulled her into my body, spooning her. I inhaled deeply, savoring the smell of her shampoo.

“Why are you rushing this?” I groaned. “We’re on vacation. Relax.”

She scoffed. “Relax?”

“Mhmm.” My cock stirred. I bucked my hip and pressed myself against her ass. “We can play and work.”

She sighed and wiggled deeper into my hold. “I’ve never had a real vacation before.”

The idea saddened me. My family had taken us on vacations all during my childhood. Paris, Greece, New York, Hawaii. Even with the difficulty of them being vampires and not being able to touch sunlight, we still took lavish holidays. Scout, a simple human, thought this was impressive? This was nothing. I dove my head back into her mess of hair.

“This is just the start, baby. I’m going to take you on so many vacations all over the world. Once you get a taste, you won’t want to go back.”

“A taste of what?”

I kissed her instead of answering.

“Let’s fuck, and then get some rest. When we wake up, I’m taking you shopping.”
