It was a promise.
“You think you can get rid of me that easily? I want you for eternity, babe, and I’m going to do everything in my power to make that happen.”
The butterflies in my stomach fluttered excitedly.
“Eternity seems like a long time for a woman you’ve only known for a few months.” I closed my eyes and reveled in his kisses he was pressing on my bare skin.
“I know what I want.”
A small moan escaped my lips, and it seemed to pull him from his thoughts. He cleared his throat. “Come on, we gotta go. Yorick will be at dinner soon.”
“Wait, we’re having dinner with him?”
“Not with, but we’re going to the same place. The menu looked good when I scoped it out.”
“When did you scope it out?” He’d been with me all day. We hadn’t gone to anything but a Burger King to eat for lunch.
Desi walked back to the mirror he’d been tying his tie at. “These jobs are not as quick as a bullet to the temple and done. You have to make sure the timing is right. I’ve been watching Yorick for a while now. I actually spent some time in his office, studied his schedule. Then, I drove up here, checked out the hotel, the restaurants, and other places he was going to be.”
My lips parted but I said nothing. His career was so… fascinating.
“You ready?” He finished dressing and turned to me. I fluffed my hair and took a second look to make sure my makeup wasn’t smeared.
“Let’s go.”
Desi drove us to a beautiful restaurant. I’d never been somewhere this fancy. They had cloth napkins and candles at all the tables. The menu was in French, so I asked him to order for me. We were served wine and some appetizer I couldn’t pronounce. It tasted good, whatever it was.
After the waitress left our table, I leaned in to whisper to Desi, “Is he here? Yorick?”
“Behind you, to the left. Don’t turn.”
My head twitched and I had to force myself not to do exactly that.
“I need an eye on him at all times,” Desi muttered low.
“Why?” I asked. Desi knew his schedule. If we missed catching him here, couldn’t we just pick him up at the next spot?
“Because he knows we’re here for him, and he’s trying to figure out how to run.”
