“Once?” June echoed, her voice catching somewhere between disbelief and curiosity. “You’re telling me you two went on a date? Just… casually?”

Miquela snorted, too pleased with herself. “Casually? Please. No one datesmecasually.”

“Of course, that’s your takeaway.”

“It’s the correct takeaway,” Miquela said. “All women love me. It’s a public service.”

Sette rolled her eyes, though the faint flush still lingered across her cheeks. “She means we met at a coffee shop.”

June’s brows knit. “A coffee shop…?”

“The one,” Miquela added, “where I pretended I didn’t speak English.”

Everything on June’s body froze except for her eyes. They darted between Sette and Miquela, neither of whom was explaining. “You’re kidding.”

Miquela grinned. “Nope. I’ve already taken this pretty femme out for a good time.”

Sette straightened a fraction, her composure sliding back into place. “I don’t ‘go for types,’ June. I go for whoever interests me.”

Miquela laughed. “Translation: she went forme.”

“I was in control the entire time,” Sette shot back. “You just didn’t believe it.”

“Oh, I realized it,” Miquela said, leaning in just enough to brush her shoulder against Sette’s. “I just let you think you were in charge all night.”

June made a small, incredulous sound. “Okay, hold on… you two had this whole… coffee shop meet-cute, and neither of you thought to mention it?”

“It gets better,” Miquela said.

“It does not.”

“It does,” Miquela insisted, turning to June with a wicked look. “That wasn’tjusta date.”

June’s stomach dropped in anticipation. “No.”

Sette exhaled with her whole chest. “We…” She paused, choosing her words more carefully this time. “We decided to make sure.”

June blinked. “Make sure…?”

“You told us to,” Miquela said simply. “Remember? Before we decided anything about how we felt, you said we should sleep with someone else.”

“I didn’t think you’d pick eachother!”

Miquela’s grin widened. “Efficient, no? Very happy circumstance. Though a bit of a shock when we found out who the other person was toyoulater…”

“You’re saying it was an accident?”

“I thought we could be friends,” Sette said. “Instead, she became my riv—”

Miquela interrupted. “Instead, she punched me in the face and nearly broke her pretty nails on my jawline.”

“We’re getting away from the point. This is supposed to be about June. We’re just clearing up that there isn’t any awkwardness between us, because I’ve already seen the contents of her drawer!”

“Quite enjoyed it, too, didn’t you?”

June gasped. “You’re seriously telling me you weren’t… intimidated?”

“June,” Sette said, stepping closer again. “I knew exactly what I was walking into.”
