If Gia wanted.
“So, are you going to turn invisible?” Gia asked.
Woops. Aurora had been staring. “Yep.” She willed herself to be unnoticed.
“Great. Follow me.”
Gia left the apartment and headed down the stairs, Aurora gliding unseen behind her.
Through the ground floor window, Trey was visible, lurking by the theater and looking at his phone. Gia pressed the lock release, exiting the building, and Aurora slipped out behind her.
Trey’s head snapped up, and he scowled at Gia before returning his attention to the phone. Had he sensed Aurora’s presence? Was such a thing possible? Trey wasn’t doing any obvious magic, but without the ability to cast a detection spell, Aurora couldn’t be sure he wasn’t using a silent spell.
There was no point lingering. Aurora shot into the sky, and Gia headed down the street. Trey didn’t give any indicationhe’d noticed Aurora’s departure, instead refocusing on Gia.
Good, he was distracted, and Lilly’s apartment wasn’t far away. Aurora flew over the top of the theater and paused, unable to help looking down one last time. Gia crossed the street, her pace unhurried.
Should Aurora have said more of a goodbye?
An unexpected ache filled her as the woman moved farther away…but no. This wasn’t the time. She’d find Gia after?—
The ache inside her exploded, turning into a gut-wrenching pull, clawing at the depths of her soul. The next instant, Aurora was on the sidewalk beside Gia.
Aurora glanced around frantically. “What the hell?”
Gia nearly tripped over her feet. She recovered and kept moving. “Aurora? Are you still here?”
At least she’d remained invisible. “Yeah. I tried to leave, but it didn’t work.”
Gia pursed her lips and kept walking.
Aurora didn’t follow. She shot into the sky and away from Gia, but she didn’t even make it to the theater before her soul ached, and she appeared at Gia’s side.
No. This could not be happening.
Was she tiedto Gia? Why? That shouldn’t be possible.
Gia glanced around uneasily and ducked into the deli. Aurora didn’t bother slipping inside after her.
Fuck this.Aurora managed to keep the words in her head, her desire to be unnoticed as strong as ever, but she could easily have screamed. If Gia hadn’t been so obviously unaware of witches and everything magical, Aurora would have sworn she’d done something to trap her.
Movement at the street corner caught Aurora’s attention, and she turned to where Trey lingered, pacing like he was waiting for someone.
Had he sensed Aurora’s spirit and followed?
No. He gave no sign of recognition, and surely, if he could tell Aurora was floating here unseen, he’d be doing something to capture her.
Aurora pressed against the building and waited helplessly, fear coiling inside her, but Trey did nothing.
Eventually, the deli door swung open, and Gia exited, a large paper bag clutched to her chest. She didn’t pause or look around as she strode purposefully in the direction of home.
Aurora followed. She had no choice. If she didn’t trail along, it seemed she’d be pulled to Gia’s side regardless. At least with Gia in earshot, she didn’t feel like she’d be spirited away by her coven and never heard from again.
Gia glanced over her shoulder as she rounded the corner, her gaze casually landing on Trey, who stood across the street. The paper bag crunched under Gia’s fingers, but her demeanor didn’t change as she continued walking. Had she not realized it was the same man who’d been outside her building?
A few moments after leaving Trey behind, he rounded the corner, his gaze fixed on Gia, clearly following.
But he couldn’t be. Why would he follow Gia?
