Once she returned with the coffee, she fought against wrapping her arms around her legs and staring out at her yard. Madeline was her best friend, and if anyone would understand, it would be her.
Abby took a deep breath and turned in her chair so that she faced Madeline. “Are you sure you’re ready for what you’re about to hear?”
“Lay it on me.” Madeline took a sip of her coffee. “I’m ready for anything.”
Famous last words,Abby thought as she launched into what happened last night.
“Holy fuck. Bold! Impressive. I didn’t know you had it in you,” Madeline said once Abby finished her story. Madeline held her hand out to Abby. “High five.”
Abby stared at Madeline’s hand. “Okay, that’s just weird.”
“What’s weird?”
“You want to give me a high five for having a threesome?”
“Absolutely!” Madeline thrust her hand out.
Reluctantly, Abby smacked her palm against Madeline’s, knowing Madeline would continue to wave her hand at Abby. “I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’ve never been given a high five for having a threesome.”
“Oh.” Madeline’s eyes twinkled. “So this wasn’t your first?”
“Of course it was.”
“Then you’ve been given a high five for every threesome you’ve ever had.”
Abby laughed, and it felt good. Madeline hadn’t batted an eye at what happened and didn’t seem to judge her.
“Is it wrong to tell you I’m jealous?” Madeline asked.
“Only you.” Abby laughed again.
“Seriously. That’s hot. I might need a cold shower.”
Abby rolled her eyes. She’d not told Madeline any of the details. If she had, Madeline would certainly need that shower. Abby needed one just thinking about it, especially—she cut off her thoughts.
Was she ready to confess the rest to Madeline? She couldn’t talk to Blythe about it, and she didn’t know if Ricki would ever talk to her again.
“So tell me the rest,” Madeline said.
“Damn you. What gives you the idea there’s more?”
“You weren’t crying earlier because you had a threesome.”
“What if I was afraid of telling you? Worried about what you’d think.”
“Nope.” Madeline shook her head. “I’m not buying it. You’re catching feelings for Ricki?”
“Jesus. If you’re picking that up, what do you think Blythe is thinking?”
Madeline smiled. “Blythe is thinking, ‘what video should I post today?’”
Abby scowled, but she knew it was true. This morning, Blythe seemed fine, having moved past last night, while Abby and Ricki were in agony.Agony?Hope rose inside Abby. Why would Ricki be in agony if it had meant nothing to her?
“Goddamn it,” Abby said. “I have to stop thinking like that.”
Madeline twirled her fingers toward herself. “Back the train up. I can’t tell you why you’re thinking something until you tell me what it is.”
“I think I am catching feelings for Ricki. I didn’t tell you everything.”
