Abby froze. Was Blythe eager to take the picture because of the appearance it would give? No, it just happened. She wouldn’t have known Abby was going to mess it up.
“So you kissed…that’s it?”
“You don’t understand.” Abby wasn’t sure why she felt she needed to defend herself, or perhaps she did. If she was honest, it had been a blow to her ego that Blythe hadn’t wanted more.Jesus.What was wrong with her? She’d met a nice woman who respected her enough to slow things down, and here she was feeling slighted.
“Then make me understand.”
With that, Abby launched into a monologue about how she’d spent her weekend. By the time she’d neared the end of herstory, she was feeling better. Blythe was just being gallant by not pushing herself on Abby. It didn’t mean she wasn’t attracted. The goodbye kiss she’d given Abby before she boarded the train should have told her that.
“Damn, you kept busy,” Madeline said once Abby finished. “I saw it all on TikTok, but I just figured.” Madeline put her hand against her forehead. “I don’t know what I figured. It wasn’t like you could fake where you were.”
“Some of them do.” When Abby saw the confused look on Madeline’s face, she added, “But we didn’t.”
“They can fake where they are? No way.”
“AI. Blythe taught me what to look for. But I promise, none of ours was faked.”
“Of course, the ultra-responsible Abby would never fake anything.” Madeline smiled. “The video of you when you met at Union Station was adorable. There were so many comments, I couldn’t keep up with them.”
Abby slowed her rocking and sat up straighter. Should she confess to Madeline it was faked? No, it hadn’t been faked. They had just reshot it. There was a big difference. “It’s crazy how interested everyone seems to be in our…um…our…” Could she call it a relationship? “Our meeting.”
“No doubt. You were all over my feed and lots of other feeds. The engagement was off the charts.”
Abby grinned. “Now you sound like Blythe. She was watching it all weekend. It drives Ricki crazy.”
“I’m sure the third wheel didn’t help your chance for romance.”
“Ricki? No, it wasn’t like that. She tried to give us privacy, but we kept insisting she join us. She’s so sweet, and the two of them together are hilarious.”
Madeline smirked and raised her eyebrows several times. “So when Blythe visits Harveston, I get to spend the entire weekend with you two?”
“No!” Abby thrust her hand toward Madeline and contorted her face into a look of horror.
“Very funny. But still. Why was she always around?”
“It’s her house. And she’s the one who shot all the videos.”
Madeline crinkled her nose, and then a twinkle filled her eyes. “The ones in bed?”
“No, not those.” Abby gave Madeline a disapproving look.
“But it would’ve made the story more interesting.”
“You’re such a pervert.”
Madeline laughed. “When do you see her again?”
Abby grinned. “Next weekend.”
CHAPTER 21
“I’m not so surethis is a smart idea,” Ricki said as she tightened the harness around Blythe’s thighs. “Do you have it on right?”
Blythe slapped her hands against the belt around her waist. “I’m positive. What other way could it go on?”
“I don’t know.” Ricki scowled.
“What the fuck, dude? You should be happy I’m wearing a harness this time.” After all, for the last stunt she’d performed on the roof, she’d not worn any safety gear.
