Blythe dropped her phone onto her lap. She’d search later.
Ricki yawned. “I’d better shower and get to bed. Only two more days of this shit.” She stood and picked up her shoes.
“Abby’s going to get here by four tomorrow. We meet with Winnie at six.”
“Cool. You’ve got everything set?”
Blythe grinned. “Yep. She wants to shoot a series of ten videos with me.”
“Congratulations, my friend.” Ricki paused. “I know you’re getting what you’ve been striving for, but please be careful.”
“Careful?”
“Cyn. Dapper. Things can turn on a dime. It’s a brutal world you’re playing in.”
“Rhinoceros skin.” Blythe tapped her fist against her chest several times.
“But what type of skin does Abby have?”
Blythe sighed. “Point taken.”
CHAPTER 29
“You look tired,” Madelinesaid when she entered Abby’s office on Monday morning. She wriggled her eyebrows. “Didn’t get much sleep this weekend?”
“Hush. Nothing like that.” Abby set her pen down, knowing she’d have to humor Madeline before she could get back to work.
“Then what was it like?” Madeline plopped into the chair in front of Abby’s desk. “You normally come back from Berwyn looking fresh and relaxed.”
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.” Madeline rapped the top of Abby’s desk with her knuckles. “Come on. Talk to me.”
“It was kinda a working weekend, so it wasn’t as much fun.”
“Working? Define working.”
“Roberta’s sister Winnie—”
“Board president Roberta?”
Abby nodded. “Yeah. Her sister is a creator and does Gen X stuff. She agreed to shoot some videos with Blythe, so we did that Friday night.”
“But there’s still Saturday and Sunday, right?”
“I came home early on Sunday.” Abby knew she was being elusive. But it was easier letting Madeline ask questions and pull it out of her.
“Did you two have a fight?”
“No, nothing like that. She had a family thing, so I came home.”
“Ah.” Madeline put her hand on her chin and nodded. “Now I’m seeing the problem.”
No, she wasn’t.But Abby understood her assumption. “I was okay with it. Her family is enormous, and she’s not ready to introduce me to the whole fam damily, as she calls them.”
“Is she ready to introduce you to her parents?”
“We haven’t talked about it. It’s only been a couple months.”
