Lily climbs off the bed, her face covered in shadows, but I can still tell she’s looking right at me. Assessing. Gauging my mood given my hands are still under my head, and I haven’t tried to touch her.
My cock doesn’t count in this scenario. She had total control over that, and fuck, she did it so well.
Bending to pick up her t-shirt, she quickly pulls it over her head and turns to leave.
Fuck, she’s leaving.
My heart sinks.
But then she stops and turns back to me, taking a step in my direction before stopping again.
“You’re angry at me for how I spoke to you earlier?” she asks, her voice quiet and soft.
“It’s fine, Lily. Go back to bed.”
Even in the dark, I can see her head tilt to the side. She’s quiet for a few beats, and I drag my eyes from her to stare back at the ceiling before she speaks again.
“I’m sorry.” Her voice sounds pained.
I keep my gaze locked on the ceiling when I speak. “What are you sorry for?”
Lily approaches the bed, her slender frame filling my peripheral as the moonlight touches her again. “For the way I spoke to you.”
Keeping my head straight, I shift only my eyes to glance at her.
“The way you spoke to me isn’t the problem, Lily. In fact, that fiery part of you that you keep hidden from most people is partof what attracts me to you.”
“Oh,” she whispers, shifting awkwardly beside the bed. “Then what was it that I did?”
My cheeks flare with anger.
How doesn’t she know?
I thought she would have gauged by how pissed off I became when I asked her not to lie to me.
“Asher?”
I drag my eyes away from her and return them to the ceiling.
Do I really have the right to know her secrets?
Maybe not, but it doesn’t change the fact that I want to know them, because to me, knowing them means she trusts me more than anyone else, and that I mean more to her than a fuck fest with her sons’ best mate.
“Fuck it, Asher. Talk to me,” she hisses in anger. “I don’t have the patience for brooding males that need me to mind read.”
I move so fast she doesn’t see me coming.
I grab her, pulling her to the bed and flip us over, so she’s left with my weight, pinning her to the mattress.
A gasp flies from her parted lips as she stares wide eyed up at me, fucking stunning being at my mercy.
“I asked you not to lie to me,” I hiss between clenched teeth. “I asked you that because I am concerned. I can sense something big is happening, and you’re trying to deal with it on your own, but you don’t have to. I’m right. Fucking. Here. I can help you. Be a support for you. Be someone to bounce ideas and concerns off. A fucking shoulder to cry on, Lily.” I’m vibrating with frustration, and for a moment, I think she’s gonna cave. Going to let down her walls and let me in, but any hope of that is short-lived as her face transforms, her walls going back up right before my eyes as her blue gaze hardens, and her parted lips lock tight.
“Get off me.” Her tone is calm. Too calm. Like a spider waiting to strike.
“Fine,” I hiss, rising off her quickly to watch her scramble off the bed.
She doesn’t turn back this time. Doesn’t even hesitate to pull the door open and close me back inside alone.
