I should move, hide, get the hell out of dodge, but I don’t. I stand my ground. And as if she senses exactly where I am, she looks directly into my eyes.

A connection that could cross seas and scale mountains passes between us.

A split second of time is shared only by us.

Everly smiles somberly. I will ache for eternity from that expression. There’s no bitterness or hatred portrayed in her eyes. Only amnesty, acquittal, absolution.

She let go.

She let go ofme, and she forgives me.

Forgiveness is not what I came here looking for, though.

I made my choice.

I stand by it, and I’m prepared to live the rest of my life with the consequences. As heart-wrenching as they may be.

I just wanted to see her one last time.
