She shook from head to toes, and as she came, she clenched his shaft and called out, “Rufus!” Then flopped forward. He briefly thought she had fainted with the power of her climax, until she released a long sigh and he knew she was simply in a state of bliss.

He pumped a few more times into her upturned arse, building enthusiastically to the peak. He wanted to show her how much he loved her, and if he couldn’t say those words then he would ensure she would feel them. With shudder, he came, spilling his hot seed into her bottom hole. She remained plugged by him for a few minutes while he calmed his racing heartbeats. He cautiously withdrew and eased her down flat. By the time he’d cleaned up, she was fast asleep.

Lying next to her, he draped a blanket over her body. Later, in the night, when the rain stopped, she stirred and snuggled up to him. In the morning light, she rose and performed her own ablutions using a bucket of water. With a beaming smile, she kissed his lips and hurried off to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Rufus lazed in bed feeling very content. He tucked his hands behind his head and hummed.

“So, she did it?” Felix was leaning against the doorway.

Rufus sat up. “She was divine. Like Venus. She would take us both, I’m sure of it.”

Felix smiled. “I’m sure, too. Which is good. Because I have plans.”

Rufus dressed quickly and followed his friend to the atrium where breakfast laid waiting for them. Bethan knelt by Felix’s seat and with her head bowed, she held out a platter of fruit.

“Thank you, Bethan,” Felix said graciously. “You may listen to what I have to say.”

She would listen anyway, but by giving her permission it allowed her to lift her head. Her eyes shone brightly and her cheeks had a rosy glow to them. If she ailed in any way, it wasn’t visible.

Rufus longed to take her on his knee, hug her to his chest, and tell her she was his. But, Felix was in charge and it was Felix who spoke to them as their commander.

“Bethan, do you miss your people?” he asked.

“Yes. I miss them. I wonder if they are well,” she replied.

“I came here content to live as a Roman. However, I must be honest, I am thinking about my clan. I have but a few memories of them. I, too, wonder if they fare well in these difficult times.”

“Where do they live, Master?” she asked politely.

“In the lands of Briganti, near to your people, the Carvetii. We were once enemies. But I have no hatred of any clan. I only wish to see my mother again.” He rolled a plum between his fingers.

Rufus had not seen Felix so thoughtful. As for Bethan, the revelation that she and Felix were from neighbouring clans, and likely to have fought one another, had taken the colour from her cheeks.

What did she think of her master now?

Chapter Fifteen

She should be angry, but she wasn’t. Felix had once been the victim of slavery and like her, caught up in the trade. The Romans had taken both of them from rival tribes and used them for financial gain. She wasn’t free and neither was Felix a Roman… yet. Perhaps if he met his people again, he would have no need to stick to Roman ways and he might even consider freeing her.

She straightened her back. “I can show you those lands. I know where to go.”

What she hoped was along the way to discover news of Ceadda too.

Felix reached out and took her hand. “I’m pleased. We three shall travel together. Now that the rains have come, I can leave. I’ve sent for an overseer to come and manage the farm.”

“What about Awen? She can’t cope on her own.”

Felix drew her closer. “Caradoc. He’s formed an attachment to a girl in the village. I’ve given her permission to live up here with him. They are to marry.”

Another young woman in the house? “But she is not a slave.”

“No, I shall give her food and a room. I will not touch her. She is his.” He stroked his fingers down her cheek and she shivered at the delicate touch.

“What of the goddess of fertility?” she asked. Would he still want her? Need her? She glanced across the room where Rufus sat, his goblet untouched. He showed nothing of his innermost thoughts. Was she important to him too?

“I shall continue to offer my seed. I can’t risk angering them now that the rains have come. So, you will continue to bend to my needs. And those of my friend. He, I think, needs you as much as I do.”

The heat rose in her cheeks and she dropped her eyes.
