I’ll talk to Penelope and circle back.

Good.

I dial up Penelope on my way back home.

As always, she answers on the first ring. “How did it go?”

“I think it’s between two offers, but one is significantly better.” I have to be honest with her. The money, the position, the chance at championships are all waiting for me in New York, but the Trojans would keep us here.

I hate Shane Whitaker a little more for putting me in this position.

“Which two?” she asks.

“Trojans and New York.”

“I figured… we need to talk, Decker.”

I hate when she uses my full name outside of when she wants to have sex.

“Yeah, I’m on my way home. See you soon.”

“I’ll be here.”

I really hope she’s not about to tell me she’s changed her mind about coming with me, but if so, decision made—I’ll be a Trojan.

Penelope

I’m officially out of time. I’ve tried to make contact, but of course he has to be a stubborn bastard.

Decker’s Uber pulls up along the curb, and I open the front door, waiting for him to get his suitcase and walk up the stairs. As soon as he steps in, he drops it and wraps his arms around me, pulling me into him.

I relish the safety of his arms, but if I don’t do this right away, I might lose my nerve. I take his hand and lead him into the family room.

“Have I been a good boy?” He waggles his eyebrows.

“Yeah, I’m not into that kind of role play.” I sit on the couch and pat the spot next to me.

He takes a seat and lies back, closing his eyes. “I sleep like shit when you’re not next to me.” His forearm goes over his eyes, and he tries to get me to snuggle with him.

“Decker.”

His eyes peek open, probably hearing something in my tone. “What’s up?”

“I have to tell you something.”

“Is Hazel okay?” He sits up straight. “She’s at school, right?”

“Yeah.”

His face softens. “Are you pregnant? Did something happen with your birth control? I gotta say, I was going to bring up trying. I mean, Hazel is only getting older, and I don’t want them to be too far apart in age.”

“Deck!”
