He won’t. We both know he won’t.

His voice is courteous, and now he’s waiting for me to leave so he can get on with his day.

I gather my folder and stand. “He’s the best third baseman in this league.” I try to keep my voice from being too emotional. “You know that. Everyone in this building knows that. I hope your decision reflects it.”

“Thank you for coming in.” He doesn’t bother standing to see me out.

Derek is already at the door.

I walk out through the waiting area, down the hallway, and out of the front office. The cold November air hits my face as I stand on the sidewalk outside Webber Field and look up at the stadium.

I did what I could.

I take out my phone and do not call Decker because there’s nothing to tell him yet. He doesn’t need to know I’m here.

Instead, I go to my @HandsOffDeck Instagram account and make a post as a last attempt at saving my husband’s job.

Written By Bryce Cavanaugh | The Breakout

CHICAGO —The Chicago Colts have officially re-signed third baseman Decker Davis to a four-year contract worth $72 million, with a mutual option for a fifth year. The deal, confirmed Tuesday morning by both the organization and Davis’s agent, keeps the four-time Gold Glove winner in Chicago.

Davis, 34, spent the offseason as one of the most closely watched names in free agency after the Colts initially declined to extend a qualifying offer. Multiple teams were reported to have made significant runs at the veteran infielder, including at least one major market club whose offer was described by sources as “substantial.” Davis declined them all.
